Design and costing about uts

Uts is an environmentally friendly building and beautiful university. Uts is the first university that
archived a GBI [platinum index] rating in Malaysia and also rated as one of the most beautiful
university on Malaysia. UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the
construction of the university was the brainchild of Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib
Mahmud also UTS chancellor, who wanted a futuristically designed campus with an intent to reflect
the town of Sibu.

“Sibu is small and not well-known, and if you build an ordinary university it will just be another
university so he (Tun Abdul Taib) came up with this futuristic, modern and contemporary design.
“This was to make the campus a public attraction but at the same time the greenery and natural
environment must be retained,” he told Bernama.

The one of the interesting features is the oculus structures and spiral funnel. This design make the
campus look more beautiful The oculus can collect the rainwater when it’s raining and the rain water
can be used for watering the plants in school and it has archived water saving.

Moreover, water reservoir is an interesting design. The design of water reservoir is designed to pay
tribute to Sungai Rejang the longest river in Malaysia, which has made this stunning site a favorite
spot for pre-wedding photography. When a gust of wind hits the school, this will pass over the water
reservoir, which will chill the breeze and way lower the campus's temperature.

Additionally, the strategically placed double-glazed windows and inclicned windows all around the
structure offer additional benefits above regular windows, such as greater energy cost savings,
sound insulation, and increased safety. This design also made the building look more interesting and
beautiful than usual building.

Too, from uts top view we can see that the campus is surrounded by plants. You can see variety of
plants in campus. This layout not only enhances the beauty of the campus but also improves the
quality of the air in the campus.

In addition, Solar photovoltaic system in campus can effectively save the power. When the sun
shines into a solar panel, energy from the sunlight is absorbed by the PV cell in the panel. This
energy creates electrical charges that moves in response to an internal electrical field in the cell,
causing electricity to flow. This design greatly reduces energy consumption.

The first phase of the university construction was complete d in 2013 at cost almost RM1 billion
which covered the construction of the main campus while second phase was completed in 2019 at a
cost of RM250 million which included the construction of a surau, parking complex and two
dormitory blocks.
