Dr. K.N. Satyanarayana was the speaker. He has been a Professor in the BTCM
Division, IITM. Currently serving as the Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Tirupati,
he is also a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. During the
session, he discussed various aspects of the 'Conceptualization and Construction of IIT
Tirupati' in detail.
The Union Cabinet has sanctioned Rs. 1,074 crores to the Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT), Tirupati for the construction of its new and permanent campus in Andhra
Pradesh. For developing its permanent campus, IIT Tirupati has been allotted a total plot area
of 530.11 acres upon which the Phase-I built up area for the development of the project is 3
million square feet. The proposed project involves the construction of administrative block,
department blocks, convention center, library, common facilities like guest house, health
center, bank, post office, shopping center, community center, hostels and faculty & staff
housing. It would be developed in two parcels on either side of Yerpedu-Venkatagiri
Highway (NH 565) at Merlapaka village of Yerpedu Mandal, Chittoor district. Presently, IIT
Tirupati is operating from the temporary campus on Tirupati – Renigunta road and also the
transit campus at Yerpedu. As a part of establishing facilities in the permanent campus,
Master plan has been completed for 12,000 students campus. DPR has already been approved
to establish 2500 students campus and is scheduled for completion by 2024 (Phase I
construction).
On the given area for construction of IIT major advantage was that there were no trees
on the site. So no environmental issues created. Sometimes in this type of construction site
like there can be create problem because of animals like elephant which broke walls. But IIT
Tirupati has got one more advantage that behind the site there is area like mountain. So site is
protected from animals. IIT Tirupati has also plan for rain water harvesting. In rainy season
water can be store as back side of site is mountain. There is much more level difference
between front and back side of college. Therefor two big water tanks are constructed in back
side where level is higher compare to front side. So that water can be easily supply. IIT
Tirupati’s dining hall are quite interesting. Instead of small ceiling fan, big ceiling fans are
used. Advantage of this thing is that less noise, more air circulation, less power consume.
Small part (19 acres) is situated in another side of highways. Using under bridge that part will
be connected with main campus. Over bridge will need more space, that’s why under bridge
is preferred.

COVID-19 had made impact on IIT-Tirupati project. After first unlock major
challenge was labor. Because for travelling labor faced many problems like certificate issues,
RTPCR, etc. Special colony was built at construction society and also give unique name to
that colony called “Vishwakarma Colony”.
Now a days all buildings in the transit campus are being constructed using fast-track
construction technologies like glass fiber reinforced gypsum (GFRG) building system and
pre-engineered buildings. The transit campus facility is expected to be operational from
August 2018. Logo of IIT Tirupati is pretty interesting as it is different from other IITs. The
Logo represents the visual identity of IIT Tirupati, that is, it combines the letters of its
acronym and a series of symbolic images along with it.
Conclusion
IIT Tirupati got a very good site for construction as it has many advantages related
environment. And any construction needed very much effort to develop it.
