CHEMISTRY – GRADE 9 (PRE – AP)

Task: Determining the Molar Mass of a Compound (Criteria B)

DUE DATE 22 MARCH

In this task, you will design and conduct an investigation to determine the molar
mass of a compound.

Follow the steps below:

1. Select a compound: Choose a compound of your choice that can be easily

obtained and has a known chemical formula. Examples include table salt
(NaCl), baking soda (NaHCO3), or sucrose (C12H22O11). You can select other
examples.

2. Plan the investigation: Outline the steps you will take to determine the
molar mass of the compound. Consider the following aspects:

a. Materials: List the materials and equipment you will need, such as a
balance, graduated cylinder, and glassware.

b. Procedure: Describe the experimental procedure you will follow,

including measurements and calculations involved.

c. Safety: Identify any safety precautions you need to take during the
investigation, such as wearing goggles or working in a well-ventilated area

3. Conduct the investigation: Carry out the planned experiment following the

Procedure you designed. Make accurate measurements and record your

Observations.

4. Data analysis: Analyze the data you collected during the investigation.
Calculate the molar mass of the compound using the measurements you
obtained and the known chemical formula.
5. Conclusion: Write a conclusion summarizing your findings. Discuss any
sources of error or limitations in your investigation and suggest
improvements for future experiments.
