21

Chapter 2:

Internship Activities

2.1. Detailed Description of Weekly Basis Activities

Below is the description of works performed by me during six weeks internship program at
Pdh Pharmaceuticals (Pvt.) Ltd

Week # 1

I began to work as an internee in August. This report provides a top-to-bottom look at my

experiences and adjustment to my entry-level position over the first week. On my first day, I

was warmly welcomed into the company, then I met the GM Muhammad Akhtar who

introduced me to the people working in finance department and the key staff and I get a

chance to work under his supervision. At first, they just allow me to observe the activities

being performed in different departments so I get familiar with the working environment and

the way staff is accomplishing their task in given time, My supervisor played a vital part in

assisting me with adjusting to the organization's current circumstances.

I get a chance to briefly observe the activities performed related to the internal controls of the

receiving department.

Indeed, first week was all about introduction in this office. In the receiving department I

closely observe the sales order, sales invoices and Goods dispatch note. This was all about

watching and observing how the invoice was created and how it was delivered and recorded.

The first document I saw was the invoicing register.

22

Overall, first week of work was a good way to learn about how the company keeps track of

its money and how it does business.

Week # 2

In my second week, I was referred to observe another sector of the department in the office to

spend a week and observe its activities. Where I observe payroll department activities such

that salaries slips and management hierarchy.

 Calculating employee pay: This involves calculating regular pay, overtime pay,

bonuses, and other types of compensation.

 Withholding taxes and other deductions: This involves withholding taxes from

employee paychecks and remitting them to the appropriate government agencies.

Payroll departments also withhold other deductions from employee paychecks, such

as health insurance premiums and retirement contributions.

I reviewed payroll slips to see how employee pay is calculated and what taxes and other

deductions are withheld.

Week # 3

During 3rd week at PDH Pharmaceuticals, I had the opportunity to work on the preparation of

journal entries and ledgers. This involved recording the company's financial transactions in a

chronological order and organizing them into categories of accounts.

For example, I recorded journal entries for the purchase of inventory on account, the sale of

products on account, and the payment of salaries to employees. I also reconciled the

company's accounts with statements from third parties, such as banks and vendors
23

Once the journal entries were recorded, I posted them to the ledgers. This involved updating

the debit and credit balances of each account. By the end of each accounting period, the

balances of the ledgers should be equal, which indicates that the company's financial

statements are balanced. Working on journal entries and ledgers gave me valuable hands-on

experience with accounting principles and practices. I learned how to accurately record

financial transactions and how to organize them into a meaningful way. I also learned how to

reconcile accounts and how to prepare financial statements.

This experience will be beneficial to me in my future career as an accountant.

Week # 4

During 4th week at PDH Pharmaceuticals, I had the opportunity to work on the preparation of

the trial balance and financial statements. This involved ensuring that the company's

accounting system was in balance and summarizing the company's financial performance and

position.

To prepare the trial balance, I first listed all of the company's accounts and then entered the

balance of each account into the trial balance. I obtained the balances from the company's

general ledger. Once all of the accounts and balances had been entered into the trial balance, I

added up the debit and credit columns. The total debits and total credits were equal, which

confirmed that the company's accounting system was in balance.

To prepare the financial statements, I used the trial balance as a starting point. I prepared the

balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statements.

Working on the trial balance and financial statements gave me valuable hands-on experience

with accounting principles and practices. I learned how to ensure that the company's

accounting system is in balance and how to summarize the company's financial performance

and position.
24

Week # 5

During 5th week, I had the opportunity to work on preparing bank reconciliation statements.

This involved comparing the balance in the company's accounting records to the balance in

its bank account and identifying and reconciling any discrepancies.

I learned how to gather the necessary information, such as the balance in the accounting

records, the balance in the bank statement, a list of outstanding checks, and a list of deposits

in transit. I also learned how to use this information to prepare the bank reconciliation

statement and to identify any errors or discrepancies. I found this experience to be very

valuable. It gave me a deeper understanding of how bank reconciliation statements work and

how they can be used to ensure the accuracy of accounting records.

There are a number of reasons why the balance in a company's accounting records may differ

from the balance in its bank account. Some common reasons include:

Outstanding checks: Checks that have been written but not yet cashed by the payee.

Deposits in transit: Deposits that have been made but not yet processed by the bank.

Bank service charges: Fees charged by the bank for services such as account maintenance

and check processing.

NSF checks: Checks that have been deposited but bounce due to insufficient funds in the

payer's account.

Week # 6

My internship's sixth week was quite light, and it seems like a pattern to me now. Since this

was my final week, I get to explore the different departments. I only had one task this week

that included dealing with banks directly. I arrived at the bank and took a seat in the branch
25

manager. He turned over the cheques and drafts. He approved of it and oversaw it. Create a

slip of transactions for every draft and check after that.

Chapter 3:

How Was My Experience

3.1. My Experience

My internship at PDH Pharmaceuticals was an incredibly rewarding experience. I had the

privilege of working on a variety of projects related to accounting and finance, which gave

me valuable insights into the inner workings of the organization. I also had the opportunity to

work on several projects related to financial reporting. This experience taught me the

importance of accuracy and transparency in financial reporting. I also had the opportunity to

meet with senior managers to learn about their career paths and perspectives.

One of the things I appreciated most about my internship at PDH Pharmaceuticals was the

supervisor’s willingness in helping me throughout my journey. My supervisor and mentor

were both invested in my success and provided me with regular feedback and guidance. They

also encouraged me to take on new challenges and to step outside of my comfort zone.

After a month and a half at my entry-level job, I can honestly claim that I have learned a lot

about the company and that I now have an increasingly strong understanding of the typical

set of tasks for someone working in finance.

26

3.2. Operations of Organizations

I have learned in a few critical perspectives about the operations of organization:

Organizational Culture and Values:

I acquired bits of knowledge into how an association's way of life and values assume a huge

part in forming its workplace. Understanding and lining up with the guiding principle and

mission of an association is fundamental for progress as an understudy or worker.

Teamwork and Collaboration:

I figured out how cooperation and successful collaboration are basic in accomplishing the

objectives of an association. Collaboration upgrades efficiency and takes into consideration

the sharing of different viewpoints and abilities.

Communication Skills: Successful correspondence is significant for the smooth activity of

an association. I understood the significance of clear and brief correspondence in passing on

thoughts, sharing data, and settling issues.

Professionalism: I noticed and embraced proficient lead, which incorporates reliability,

sticking to organization strategies, and keeping an elevated degree of morals and

respectability.
27

3.3. Level of Responsibility

My supervisor gave me a manageable amount of responsibility throughout my internship.

The tasks and responsibilities assigned to me were planned to advance my education and

professional development. They may not have been of utmost significance to the association,

but they were meant to help me gain practical experience and furnish my skills in the field.

My supervisor furnished me with a scope of financial handlings and accounts management.

These tasks included learning and working according to the financial position of the

company, so that necessary actions should be taken.

The degree of obligation expanded continuously as I acquired insight and showed my

capacity to actually deal with tasks.

My supervisor emphasized the significance of nonstop learning, and I was urged to clarify

some pressing issues, look for direction when required, and team up with other internees.

This approach permitted me to assume on greater liability as I turned out to be more capable

in the assigned tasks.

Generally speaking, the degree of obligation given to me during my entry level position was

appropriate for my learning and expertise improvement. It permitted me to acquire involved

insight and build foundation.

28

3.4. Skills and Qualification

3.4.1 Financial analysis

In addition to my accounting work, I also had the opportunity to gain experience in financial

analysis. For example, I analyzed the company's financial statements to identify trends and

patterns in sales, revenue, and expenses.

3.4.2 Communication and teamwork

As an intern at PDH Pharmaceuticals, I had the opportunity to interact with a variety of

stakeholders, including accountants, financial analysts, and senior management. I learned the

importance of clear and concise communication, as well as the ability to work effectively

with others to achieve common goals. For example, I worked with a team of accountants to

prepare the company's annual budget. This project required me to be able to communicate my

ideas clearly and to collaborate effectively with others.

3.4.3 Professionalism

As an internee, it is important to maintain confidentiality, be ethical and honest in all

dealings, be reliable and meet deadlines, and be respectful of others. During my internship at

PDH Pharmaceuticals, I strived to uphold these professional standards. For example, I always

kept confidential information confidential and I was always honest and transparent in my
29

dealings with others. I also made sure to meet all deadlines and to be respectful of the time of

others.

3.4.4 Continuous learning and adaptability:

Because associations are dynamic, I discovered what flexibility means. It is essential to have

the ability to constantly advance, adapt to new technologies and methods, and stay up to date

with market trends.

3.4.5 Hierarchical Culture:

I learned a little bit about how a group's values and way of life influence the workplace.

Fitting in and making a contribution actually need an understanding of and alignment with

certain social attitudes.

3.4.6 Leadership and mentoring:

I observed how coaches and pioneers guide and assist their colleagues. Leading involves

inspiring and collaborating with others to achieve common goals.

3.4.7 Networking:

I realized how important it is to create effective groups. Organizing offers incredible

opportunities for professional and personal growth.

3.5 Expectations and Achievements:

3.5.1 Objectives

My objective for the internship at PDH Pharmaceuticals was to gain hands-on experience in

the field of finance and accounting and to get a chance to learn real time scenarios and

working experience rather than just taking classroom lectures without performing practical
30

task to see how organizations handle their finance for decision making, and develop the skills

and knowledge necessary to have a successful career in accounting.

3.5.2 Achievements

I was really fortunate to get a chance to work under the supervision of amazing people who

helped me achieve my goal. I learned a lot more concise knowledge and skills that would be

impossible to attain without my working experience as an internee. I observed how financial

statements are being prepared and how receiving and payroll department works. As a whole I

achieved what I expected and learned according to my interests.

3.6 Challenges

Sure, here are some challenges I faced during my internship at PDH Pharmaceuticals:

Learning curve

The pharmaceutical industry is a complex and highly regulated industry.. I also had to learn

about the company's financial analysis requirements.

To overcome this challenge, I made sure to ask questions and to seek out opportunities to

learn from my mentor and other team members.

Workload

The workload was often heavy, especially during observing multiple departments. I had to

learn to manage my time effectively and to prioritize my tasks. I also had to learn to say no to

new commitments if I was already feeling overwhelmed.

To overcome this challenge, I developed a daily to-do list and I prioritized my tasks based on

importance and urgency.

Deadlines
31

The company had tight deadlines for completing financial statement analysis and other tasks.

I had to learn to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.

To overcome this challenge, I broke down large tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks. I

also set realistic deadlines for myself and I made sure to communicate my deadlines to my

mentor and other team members.

Communicating with technical experts

I often had to communicate with financial experts, such as managers. I had to learn to

understand their work and to communicate complex financial concepts in a clear and concise

way.

To overcome this challenge, I made sure to do my research before meeting with financial

experts. I also asked clarifying questions and I took notes to ensure that I understood their

work.

Working as part of a team

I had to learn to work effectively with other members of the accounting team. This involved

learning to collaborate on projects, share information, and resolve conflicts.

To overcome this challenge, I made sure to be open to feedback and to be willing to

compromise. I also made an effort to get to know my team members on a personal level. This

helped to build trust and rapport, which made it easier to collaborate on projects and to

resolve conflicts.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have faced these challenges during my internship at PDH

Pharmaceuticals. They helped me to grow as an financial analyst and to develop the skills and

knowledge necessary to have a successful career in the field of finance.

32

3.7 Correlation between Experience and Classroom Knowledge

During my internship, I had the opportunity to experience the difference between classroom

knowledge and working knowledge. In the classroom, I learned about accounting principles

and practices in a theoretical way. I learned how to record financial transactions, prepare

financial statements, and analyze financial data. However, I didn't fully understand how these

concepts applied to the real world until I started working at PDH Pharmaceuticals.

One of the biggest differences I noticed was the level of detail required in the workplace. In

the classroom, we often used simplified examples to illustrate accounting concepts. However,

in the workplace, I had to deal with complex financial transactions and financial statements. I

also had to learn about the company's specific accounting policies and procedures.

Another difference I noticed was the importance of communication and teamwork in the

workplace. In the classroom, I worked on individual assignments and projects. However, in

33

the workplace, I had to collaborate with other members of the accounting team to complete

tasks.

Finally, I learned that working in the accounting field requires more than just technical

knowledge. I also had to develop soft skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and

communication.

Here are some specific examples of how my classroom knowledge differed from my working

knowledge:

Classroom knowledge:

Financial statements, such as the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement.

Financial analysis techniques, such as ratio analysis.

Working knowledge:

How to apply accounting principles and practices to real-world transactions.

How to prepare financial statements in accordance with company’s real time analysis.

How to analyze financial data to identify trends and patterns and to assess a company's

financial performance.

How to communicate complex financial concepts to both technical and non-technical

audiences.

How to work effectively with other members of the accounting team and with other

departments within the company.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the difference between classroom

knowledge and working knowledge. It has helped me to develop the skills and knowledge

necessary to have a successful career in accounting.
