Assignment 1

1. Give at least two comprehensive meaning of Social History.

Social history highlights the lives of common people, indicating that history begins
with ordinary citizens instead of political leaders (Social History & Historiography in the
20th Century, 2018). Moreover, social history provides us with the resources to consider
the causes, consequences, and influences of citizenship formation as well as how
struggles over identity have occurred in the past (Tilly, 1995).

2. What is Historicity of Text.

The Historicity of Texts aims to “suggest the historical specificity, the social and
material embedding, of all modes of writing―not only the texts that critics study but also
the texts in which we study them” (Greenblatt & Gunn 2007, p. 209).

3. What is Philosophy of History.

History is the "first order" study of past events; philosophy of history is the study of
these subjects (Atkinson, 1978). It proposes that we could "learn from history" and that
by understanding the forces, choices, and circumstances that led us to where we are now.

4. Discuss the Philosophy of History according to:

- Arnold Joseph Toynbee

According to Toynbee (2022), civilizations go through distinct stages of youth,

maturity, and senescence throughout the course of human history.

- Giambattista Vico

Vico's interpretation of civilization's history promotes the idea that human nature
is fundamentally the same in all historical contexts, enabling for the understanding of
historical events and processes (Vico et al., 2002).
- Karl Marx

Karl Marx stated that philosophy is not just limited to theoretical work; it is
also interested in real-world concerns. It encompasses both theory and practice. As a
theory, it clarifies the fundamental ideas, and as a practice, it puts these ideas into action
in real-world situations. Marx believed that theory and practice were
intertwined.(Rashid, 2019).

4. Trace the relationship of social history into other branches of social sciences.

Together, history and the social sciences can advance intellectual practice, study, and
research methods while gaining a greater understanding of man and his social
interactions. The social scientist depends on the historian's sources and temporal
orientation, whereas the historian needs the social scientist's conceptions and research
procedures (Amugo & Orji, 2007).
