VACUUM CLEANER USING IOT

ABSTRACT
The creation of a smart floor cleaning robot that can both vacuum and mop floors. The
robot can operate autonomously or be controlled remotely via an Android app. It is built
using an Arduino MEGA microcontroller, a floor cleaning system, and a mobile
application with Bluetooth connectivity. The Android app includes a secure login system
and allows users to control the robot's motion for cleaning purposes. The robot consists
of various components including a rechargeable battery, motor system, communication
module, and software for remote control. Testing showed that the robot functions as
intended and offers similar features to commercial cleaning robots.

INTRODUCTION
Integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology into vacuum cleaners represents a
significant leap forward in home cleaning innovation. These smart devices combine
traditional vacuuming functionality with advanced connectivity features, enhancing user
convenience, efficiency, and overall cleaning performance. By leveraging IoT, vacuum
cleaners become intelligent, adaptable appliances that seamlessly integrate into modern
smart homes. At the heart of IoT-enabled vacuum cleaners are sensors and connectivity
modules that enable communication with other devices and systems. These sensors can

COMPONENTS

ARDUINO UNO
Arduino Uno is a popular microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P chip. It
features digital and analog input/output pins, USB connectivity for programming and
communication, and a power jack for external power supply. The board includes a 16
MHz quartz crystal oscillator, a USB connection, 14 digital I/O pins (6 of which can be
used as PWM outputs), 6 analog inputs, and a reset button. Arduino Uno is widely used
in various DIY projects, robotics, and IoT applications due to its simplicity, versatility,
and extensive community support with Arduino Uno, users can write and upload
programs, called sketches, using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment
(IDE).
BATTERY
A rechargeable LiPo battery of 12 V is used to provide direct current to the circuit. Due
to the size limitation of the chassis, a relatively light weight and small battery is used,
that provides current for at least one hour continuously.
DC FAN
A 12 V dc brushless fan is selected for the project to perform the vacuuming action. The
motion of the fan causes the dust particles to be sucked up into the dust container where
it gets trapped. The fan is enclosed in a wooden box so as to prevent any air leakage.
WATER PUMP
This pumps water from the water container into a mop cloth that is used to mop the floor.
A 12V de water pump is used.
ULTRASONIC SENSOR
An ultrasonic sensor is used to guide the robot as well as to prevent collision against
walls or obstacles. The sensor head emits an ultrasonic wave and measures the distance
to the wall, through the reflected wave back to the head. The distance measurement
occurs by measuring the time between emission and reception.
INFRARED SENSOR
The infrared (IR) sensor has more or less the same working principles as the Ultrasonic
but instead of emitting ultrasonic waves, it emits and receives infrared radiation. These
obstacle sensors come as Light Emitting Diodes (LED) compatible with Arduino boards
and they can emit rays from 700 nm to 1 mm wavelength. A knob is usually rotated on
the sensor in order to reduce or increase the obstacle detection distance.
BLUETOOTH MODULE
A Bluetooth module is a compact electronic device facilitating wireless communication
between devices over short distances, typically up to 10 meters. It comprises a Bluetooth
radio transceiver, microcontroller, and supporting components. Available in various
form factors, Bluetooth modules support different Bluetooth profiles and versions,
including Bluetooth Classic, Low Energy (BLE), and Dual Mode. Commonly used in
IoT, consumer electronics, and automotive systems, they enable connectivity between
devices without physical wires. With low power consumption and ease of integration,
Bluetooth modules offer a convenient solution for wireless communication, enabling
seamless connectivity between devices in a wide range of applications.

SOFTWARE AND CONTROL DESIGN


The Arduino IDE is used as the software platform for the microcontroller, while Android
Studio is used for the development of the mobile app.

MECHANICAL DESIGN

The mechanical design of a vacuum cleaner and mopping device utilizing IoT
technology focuses on optimizing cleaning performance and user convenience. Sturdy
yet lightweight chassis support internal components, while efficient suction mechanisms
and filtration systems ensure effective dirt and debris removal. Mopping systems
incorporate water tanks, pumps, and cleaning pads for thorough floor sanitation.

WHEELS
In a vacuum cleaner using IoT technology, wheels play a crucial role in facilitating
mobility, stability, and maneuverability. These components enable the device to move
smoothly across various floor surfaces, including hardwood, carpet, and tile, ensuring
comprehensive cleaning coverage. Swivel wheels enhance agility, allowing the vacuum
cleaner to navigate around furniture and obstacles with ease. Larger wheels provide
stability and traction, particularly on uneven surfaces or thick carpets. The design of the
wheels ensures that the vacuum cleaner can efficiently cover the entire cleaning area

SIDE BRUSH
In vacuum cleaner and mopping devices using IoT technology, side brush serve a vital
function by agitating and sweeping debris from edges and corners, ensuring
comprehensive cleaning coverage. Positioned strategically along the perimeter, these
brushes extend the device's reach to areas that the main suction or mopping mechanism
might not fully access. By sweeping debris towards the center of the device's path, side
brushes improve cleaning efficiency, particularly along walls, baseboards, and tight
spaces. Their rotational motion effectively dislodges dirt and dust, facilitating their
removal and contributing to the overall effectiveness of the vacuuming and mopping
process in maintaining clean living spaces.

WATER TANK
The mopping system of the robot is designed using two water tanks where the first tank
would provide water to the water pump and the second tank would push the water to the
mop cloth attached to it. Several holes were made on the second tank to ensure that the
water is distributed across a large surface of the mop cloth.

Testing for vacuum cleaner and mopping devices employing IoT technology involves
multifaceted evaluations to guarantee optimal functionality and user satisfaction. Initial

charging efficiency, while environmental testing evaluates performance under real-
