collective accountability, prioritizing harmony and cooperation over individual roles. This culture places importance on
maintaining strong family ties and tends to emphasize collective well-being.
2. Black/African American Culture: African American culture centers around traditions like maintaining family relationships,
practicing Christianity, hospitality, and pursuing education. Family reunions celebrate robust family bonds, and individuals often
assimilate into the American way of life despite facing challenges linked to poverty and limited education.
3. Asian/Pacific Islander Culture: Asian/Pacific Islander culture sees religious beliefs as crucial, with significant proportions
identifying as Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, or Muslim. Barriers to healthcare include language, cultural beliefs, and immigrant
status, while cultural aspects encompass male authority, the concept of "saving face," strong family ties, and profound respect
for elders.
4. American Indian/Alaska Native Culture: American Indian culture emphasizes harmony with nature, enduring suffering, and
respect for others, believing in the inherent goodness of humanity. Cultural values include spiritual attachment to the land,
strong family and tribal ties, viewing children as assets, resistance to acculturation, and a belief in supernatural powers in both
animate and inanimate objects.
To avoid stereotypes, start by learning about different cultures and questioning your own assumptions. Make diverse friends to
understand different perspectives and break down stereotypes. Use respectful language that doesn't reinforce bias, and be
critical of media portrayals that perpetuate stereotypes. Encourage open conversations about diversity and inclusion to create
an understanding environment. Lead by example in your actions, celebrating differences and treating everyone with respect.
Actively challenge preconceptions and promote a more nuanced understanding of diverse communities. By embodying these
principles, you contribute to a more inclusive and accepting society.
