Let’s try to dream of the time when we are done with school. The next step after graduation is to land that first
job. Create a doodle or draw your dream first job in the box below.
Good job! Now, let us look at the skills you have which will help you land on that first job. If you might discover
in this lesson that you still do not have these skills, do not worry. You still have time during your college days to
develop and work on these skills.
B. COACH: DO
Activity 1
Let us have a #throwback on your most recent or past experiences for us to reflect on your current skills and
employability. Read the questions and answer them as honestly as you can. Do not try to overthink. Write the
first thing that comes to mind:
Did you try learning to do something new recently? What was difficult (or easy) about
learning a new task or hobby?
Recall a time when you were part of a team/group. What did you do as a leader? What did you
do as a follower?
Did you ever say something to your friends (or parents) and got misunderstood? What do you
think was the cause of the misunderstanding?
What challenge did you try to resolve recently? What was the outcome and how did you feel
about the outcome?
THINK
The questions above correspond to certain skills that are important for employers. There are 4 Core Skills
identified by the International Labor Organization (ILO) as important namely:
● Learning to Learn
● Teamwork
● Communication and;
● Problem Solving.
These skills also take time to develop. Sometimes these are also called Soft Skills. These show how one works
or interacts with other people.
When we did an Employer Survey in 2020 with partner companies, they ranked the following Core Work Skills
#1. These were:
adaptability;
fitting into an organization’s culture;
listening and communicating effectively;
and identifying and solving problems.
Other skills deemed important by employers were: customer service, marketing and sales, interpersonal skills,
can work under pressure, and perseverance and motivation.
Think of a time when you have shown that you can work under pressure. What was required from you? Were
you able to do the task? For sure, you have done something well even if the odds were against you. This skill is
particularly important as you mature and join the workforce.
How about negotiation? Did you ever negotiate anything with your parents or with friends? How did you do it
and did you get what you asked for? Negotiation is give and take and win-win. As early as now, you need to try
and practice how to negotiate even for small items. This will come in handy once you get to the bigger items.
Activity 2
Now that you have known about the different Core or Soft Skills needed to land your first job, try to finish these
statements that are related to the 4 core skills:
Communication: I am responsible enough with what I say and I will show this through:
