UNIT 9: WHO WE ARE?

1.Impulse /ˈɪm.pʌls/ (N): a sudden strong wish to do something.


Eg: "I didn't know you were looking for some new shoes." "Oh, I wasn't - I
just bought them on impulse."
2.Clumsily /ˈklʌm.zəl.i/ (ADV): in a way that is not careful and controlled, and
makes you likely to have accidents
Eg: He tripped clumsily on the rug and fell flat on his face
3.Risk /rɪsk/ (N): the possibility of something bad happening
Eg: In this business, the risks and the rewards are high.
4.Pleasure /ˈpleʒ.ər/ (N): enjoyment, happiness, or satisfaction, or something that
gives this
Eg: His books are a pleasure to read because he writes with
such clarity and precision.
5.Release /rɪˈliːs/ (V): to give freedom or free movement to someone or something
Eg: He was released from prison after serving two years of a five-year sentence.
6.Intense /ɪnˈtens/ (ADJ): extreme and forceful or (of a feeling) very strong
Eg: He suddenly felt an intense pain in his back.
7.Realize /ˈrɪə.laɪz/ (V): to understand a situation, sometimes suddenly
Eg: They didn't realize the danger they were in.
8.Genetic /dʒəˈnet.ɪk/ (ADJ): belonging or relating to genes (= parts of
the DNA in cells) received by each animal or plant from its parents
Eg: There are tests which can establish a baby's genetic endowment.
9.Boundary /ˈbaʊn.dər.i/ (N): a real or imagined line that marks the edge or limit of
something
Eg: Residents are opposed to the prison being built within the city boundary.
10.Adopted /ˈbaʊn.dər.i/ (ADJ): An adopted child has been legally taken by
another family to be taken care of as their own child:
Eg: They've got two adopted children and one of their own.
11.Coincidence /kəʊˈɪn.sɪ.dəns/ (N): an occasion when two or
more similar things happen at the same time, especially in a way that
is unlikely and surprising
Eg: We hadn't planned to be in France at the same time as Ann and Charles - it
was just a happy coincidence.
12.Divorced /dɪˈvɔːst/ (ADJ): married in the past but not now married
Eg: His second marriage was annulled because he never divorced his first wife.
