Art History:
I chose to research the Wayang Puppets. This puppets are used in the Indonesian island or Java. They
got their name because Wayang means shadow and they are often used as shadow puppets in
performances. They normally are used to act out religious stories or stories from the Ramayana which
is an ancient epic Hindu poem that was written in India 3000 years ago. These puppets have been used
for thousands of years. The first recorded puppet performance was in 930 CE.
They are made of leather and carefully chiseled with fine tools. They are supported with buffalo horn
handles and control rods. They would be painted in beautiful hues and even sometimes be covered with
gold leaf. These can be played by anyone but The puppet masters are skilled in moving the puppets
while another performer tells the story using a variety of voices.

Vocabulary
List lesson specific terms and their definitions in age-appropriate language. Include artistic concepts, key
figures, historical periods/genres, themes, concepts from other subject areas; etc.
Hand puppet – a puppet that is operated by putting a hand inside.
Rod puppet – a puppet that is operated by rods/sticks.
Puppeteer – a person who works puppets.
Template – a pattern for a process.
Iris – the colored tissue at the front of the eye.

Instructional Procedure
Describe the step-by-step plan, outlining how you will instruct the lesson. Divide this section into days of instruction with a central focus for each.
Edit the section below as needed, using Madeline Hunter’s headings on the left to help you organize the steps of instruction listed below.

students and determine project sample and show them how it works by moving the mouth and speaking in a different voice. In
readiness for the this other voice I will say “this project will challenge you use new recycled materials and try new ideas to

2. Lecture – I will then give a brief overview of the history of puppets and why they are important. I would

Guided Practice 5. Independent practice – I will then have the students do the three steps I just demonstrated themselves.
Students engage in art While they are doing this, I will continue to remind them of all of the safety rules I went over at the
making with guidance. beginning of class I will also watch them all very closely to make sure the rules are being followed.
6. Guided practice – I will be showing the students how to put the sock on the puppets by pulling it on over

making independently. 7. Demonstration – I will then demonstrate how to fold back the sock and hot glue it to the break in the
mouth
8. Guided practice – then I will have the students cut and glue the bottom sock on. First I will instruct them
to cut off the toe of the sock off and then put it on their arm like a tube. Then I will instruct them to put
the rest of the puppet on over the other sock. While I am doing this I will be showing them how to do it
on my own hand. Then I will instruct the and show them how to glue around the rim of the socks and
attach them together.
9. Independent practice - I with have the students do this themselves but I will make sure to watch closely
because they will be using hot glue and I want to make sure that they are gluing I the right spot
10. Guided practice – once everything is glued, I will have the students make the mouth plate with the
colored felt. They will first need to choose the color of felt they want and I will encourage them to be
unique. I will then have them make a template for the felt with a scrap piece of paper. I will remind
them that the inside of the mouth needs to be smaller than the outside and to keep that in mind. Then I
will have them trace the template onto the felt and then cut it out with scissors.
11. Closer – I will have the students each clean up their own area. I will instruct them to keep and bring up
any felt or piece of paper that is bigger than their palm. then they will bring their puppets to the front and
put them in a box for safe keeping. Then once everyone has returned to their seats, I will bring up a slide
show of picture of different puppets around the world and show it to them until it is time to go
DAY 2
Central Focus for Day 2: (students will further develop their skills of creativity and imagination while making a puppet. ).

1. Review: I would like to review the importance of puppets around the world and I would like to review the
safety rules from the say before
2. First I will have students go get their puppets and they will start to make creative choices
3. Independent practice – the students will be asked to make eyes for their puppet using white foam
sheets. I will show them mine and then tell them they can make their eyes look how ever they want and
they can have up to 4 eyes if they want to. I will also have a bucket of colored markers so that they can
make whatever colored iris that they want. They will cut the eyes out with scissors after they are drawn
out and they will be glued on with hot glue
4. Independent practice – next the students will make the teeth out of the same foam pieces and the
shape is completely up to the imagination of the students. Then they will need to glue the teeth into the
mouth
5. Independent practice – next the students will add the nose. I will instruct them to come to front and pick
out a nose from a big bin of many colors and sizes of puff balls then they will be asked to glue it on to
the puppet
6. Independent practice – next the students will be asked to add hair on the puppet. I will have many rolls
of colored yarn in the front of the room and students will be asked to come up and cut strips to make
hair and then glue the hair to the puppet
7. Guided practice – last the students will need to make the hands. First they will be asked to draw out and
cut out the shape of the hands from spare cardboard.
8. Demonstration – I will demonstrate how to glue the sock scraps to the cardboard. I will do this by folding
the sock pieces over and gluing them down.
9. guided practice – The students will glue the sock scraps to the hands. This part can be very tricky so they
may need some help.

10. Independent practice – the students will connect the hands to the body. First they will need to glue the
chop sticks onto the back of the hands and then glue a piece of yarn to the back as well. then they will
glue the other side of the yarn to the body to create arms
11. Closer : Now the puppet is done and the students will be given the remaining time in class after clean up
to become puppeteers puppets in the puppet theater that will be set up at the front of the room.
