WORKSHEET 1
MICROSCOPE – PARTS AND FUNCTION
_______________________________________
OBJECTIVE: To identify parts of the microscope and their
functions. Parent’s/Guardian’s Signature Over Printed Name:
DEFINITION:

Microscope - is an essential tool in the study of life science.

It allows you to see things that are too small to be seen with the
unaided eye.
Micro means ‘very small’. Scope means ‘to look at’.

HISTORY:

 Compound microscope first developed in 1590 by Dutch

scientist Zacharias Janssen
o Compound microscope – uses more than 1
lens to magnify image
 Antoine Van Leeuwenhoek – father of microscopy
o First scientist to discover microscopic organisms
and live cells

PARTS AND FUNCTION:

 Eyepiece = allows you to view the specimen on the

stage QUIZ #1: Multiple Choice. Circle the best answer.
o Ocular lens = magnification of 10x 1. Which two parts of the light microscope magnify the image of an
object?
 Body tube = maintains distance between the eyepiece a. objectives and mirror b. eyepiece and objective
and the objective lens 2. Which should be used to observe bacteria?
o Allows light to pass up to the eyepiece to view
a. 97x objective with immersion oil and 5x objective
the specimen
b. 43x objective and a 10x objective
3. Which of the following can be observed using the light
 Arm = allows you to carry the microscope
microscope?
o Supports the upper portion of the microscope
a. five peso coin b. tip of gumamela leaf
4. What part controls the amount of light passing through to the
 Revolving nosepiece = allows you to turn and change
slide?
objective lenses
a. diaphragm b. stage
5. What part you must hold on when carrying the microscope?
 Objective lens = magnifies the specimen
o Low power = 4x (see more of the specimen) a. body tube b. arm and base
o Middle power = 10x 6. What is use to focus the image in light microscope?
o High power = 40x (allows to see more detail) a. fine adjustment knob b. coarse adjustment knob
o Total magnification of specimen = objective lens 7. To focus a specimen, which objectives is the best to start with?
power x eyepiece (always 10x) a. low power b. high power
8. The part of the microscope has various-sized holes to change
 Stage = holds the slide to view the specimen the amount of light passing forward through the specimen?
o Opening allows for light to pass through a. stage b. diaphragm
9. He is the father of microscopy and microorganism.
 Stage clips = holds the slide in place a. Zacharias Janssen b. Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek
o Do not bring in contact with the opening of the 10. Who first developed microscope?
stage a. Zacharias Janssen b. Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek

 Diaphragm = adjusts the amount of light coming through ACTIVITY # 1

the stage Do the activity about microscope on the next page.
Materials:
 Coarse adjustment knob = large knob on the side of the Activity sheet
arm that physically moves the stage to focus on a crayons
specimen pen
o Always use for low and middle power objective
lenses ASSIGNMENT#1
Answer the questions below:
 Fine adjustment knob = small knob below the coarse A. What are the levels of organization of life from lowest to
adjustment knob that slightly sharpens the image of your highest?
specimen
o Always use for only high power objective lens

 Light source/mirror = source of light to view your B. Look for the image (picture) of Leeuwenhoek’s first microscope
specimen Print it in wallet size and post at the back of this worksheet. (5 pts)
 Base = allows you to carry the microscope
o Supports the microscope
