Question 1

Experimental work is an important part of an engineering students’s education. It is no

surprise that ethical issues often arise in the course of laboratory work. Most ethical
issues in experimentation relate to honesty in reporting results. In some cases, results
been changed or “altered” to suits the desired results. Sometimes, it seems easier to
“dry run” an experiment by recording measurement and results in lab book even
though the experiment has not been conducted, can be possible with a great help from
senior’s previous results.

Reaching to the end of academic semester, students are pressured to assignment

submission datelines and preparing for their examinations. Cheating is an issue that
is likely to have arisen in educational setting even before students began their quest
in engineering.

(a) Discuss how student can plan for a successful laboratory assignment submission.
(7 marks)

 Compare answers between each other. Make a discussion between each other
to improve the correct answer and get the best results before sending.
 Have a good leader. The function of leader must delegate tasks to each of their
teammates so make sure the project will submit on time.
 Obey the instructions carefully. They should ensure that they have all the
necessary resources and equipment needed to conduct the experiment.
 Making a draft before submitting the tasks. So, if there are any mistakes it can
be improve and make a correction.
 Recheck all the answer carefully. Rechecking answers can increase our
confidence as we have completed all the sections and making sure our
data is accurate
 Students should provide enough time for the experiment and the write-up,
considering any unforeseen delays or difficulties that might occur while
doing the experiment. It is crucial to keep precise and thorough records of the
experiment and to document any observations and findings as
soon as possible.

(b) How can students highlight honesty in preparing and submitting the laboratory
report/ assignment?
(8 marks)

 Summit the tasks early. Proving that the students not do the tasks last minute.
 Repeat the experiment. To make sure the answer are the best and the students
can make any improvement if there any human error.
 Take a photo or video. To avoid the cheating , falsifying or manipulating on
each other.
 Students must give a prove of hypothesis of the experiment. It is as a prove
that student understanding the task.
 Write the objectives of the experiment. It is important to know the concept of
the task and achieve the goals of the experiment.
 Refer any articles or reference. To improve student’s knowledge about the
tasks.
 Students can check the result of the experiment with lecture. So it can be a
prove or evidence if anything like cheating , copies and others.

(c) Students can be divided into small groups to undertake class assignments or
projects. Discuss how the team can delegate task to plan for the success for the
group.
(10 marks)
Firstly student should identify the strength and weaknesses of each team
members. It can help them in order to divide all the tasks fairly.
Students must break a complex problem to smaller part before delegate the
tasks. It will make the process of completing the task easier and faster .
Planning first before start any project. To make sure the students can achieves
the goals of the project properly.
Leader should play a good role. So the team members can give their best
cooperation during completing the tasks.
Give opinion and receive feedback on performance. So if there have any conflict
between them it can be resolve properly .
Lastly, all team members must contribute their effort and responsibility. So all the
delegated task can be completed on time and have a best answer.
