AQ010-3-1-MCFC Proof Techniques

1. Use a direct proof to prove that the sum of two odd integers is even.
2. Give a direct proof, “if n is an integer and n is odd then n3 is odd”.
3. Show that for all sets A, B, C: A  ( B  C ) = ( A  B)  ( A  C ) using a direct proof.
4. Use proof by contradiction to prove that the sum of two even integers is even.
5. Use proof by contradiction to prove that if x 2  49 then x  7 .
6. Give an indirect proof, if x is a real number and (2 x 2 + 3)( x + 5) = 0 then x = −5 using
proof by contrapositive.
7. Prove that if the square of an integer is odd, then the integer must be odd using proof by
contrapositive.
8. Show that if n is an integer and n 3 +5 is odd, then n is even using

(ii) a proof by contradiction
