TESTS

Assay, Isopropyl Alcohol, and Methanol

Analyze the sample by gas chromatography using the general parameters cited in [Part 2: Chromatography; Recommended
Procedures; Gas Chromatography]. The following specific conditions are also required.

Column . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Type I, methyl silicone

Measure the area under all peaks, and calculate the area percent for acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and methanol. Correct for
water content.

Color (APHA)
[Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Color (APHA); Procedure for Color (APHA)].

Residue after Evaporation

[Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Residue after Evaporation]. Evaporate 100 g (127 mL) to dryness in a tared, preconditioned
dish on a hot plate (~100 °C), and dry the residue at 105 °C for 30 min.

Solubility in Water
Mix 30 g (38 mL) with 38 mL of carbon dioxide-free water. The solution should remain clear for 30 min. Reserve this solution
for the test for titrable acid.

Titrable Acid
Add 0.10 mL of phenolphthalein indicator solution to the solution prepared in the preceding test. Not more than 1.0 mL of
0.01 N sodium hydroxide should be required to produce a pink color.

Titrable Base
Mix 18 g (23 mL) with 25 mL of water, and add 0.05 mL of methyl red indicator solution. Not more than 1.0 mL of 0.01 N
hydrochloric acid should be required to produce a red color.

Aldehyde
Dilute 2 g (2.5 mL) with water to 10 mL. Prepare a standard containing 0.04 mg of formaldehyde in 10 mL of water and a
complete reagent blank in 10 mL of water alone. To each, add 0.15 mL of a freshly prepared 5% solution of 5,5-dimethyl-
1,3-cyclohexanedione in alcohol. Evaporate each on a hot plate (~100 °C) until the acetone is volatilized. Dilute each with
water to 10 mL, and cool quickly in an ice bath while stirring vigorously. Any turbidity in the solution of the sample should
not exceed that in the standard. If any turbidity develops in the reagent blank, the 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione
should be discarded, and the entire test rerun with a fresh solution.

Substances Reducing Permanganate

Add 0.05 mL of 0.1 N potassium permanganate to 10 mL of the sample, and allow to stand for 15 min at 25 °C. The pink
color should not be entirely discharged, when compared with an equal volume of water.

Water
[Part 2: Titrimetric Methods; Water by the Karl Fischer Method; Volumetric Procedure; Volumetric Procedure for Samples
Using Karl Fischer Reagent, Method 1]. Use 25 mL (20 g) of the sample and a methanol-free system to prevent ketal
formation with liberation of water.

Ultraviolet Spectrophotometry
