Advanced Electrodynamics, Homework Set 5

Deadline: Thursday March 21, 12:00 (noon)

1. In a reference frame S there is a static magnetic field in a region without charges and currents. The
field is independent of z, and its y- and z-components can be written as

By = f (y) cos(kx) , Bz = 0 ,

where f (y) is an even function of y. The field is generated by sources located outside the region.
a. Show that By = B0 cos(kx) cosh(ky), and determine Bx .
Assume that in the lab frame S an electron enters the region with initial velocity ~v = v x̂.

b. Describe the electron motion in the frame S 0 that moves at the velocity ~v relative to S, and
discuss the radiation that is emitted by the electron.
c. Determine the frequency of the radiation emitted in the directions parallel and anti-parallel
to ~v , as observed in S. In which directions is the intensity zero in S 0 ?

2. An electron (charge q = −e, mass m) is confined to a very thin torus with radius ρ in the x-y plane.
A solenoid with radius a ρ is placed along the z-axis. The magnetic field B inside the solenoid
~ = −~r × B/2,
points in the positive z-direction. The vector potential in a convenient gauge is A ~ so
that Aρ = Az = 0, Aφ = ρB/2.
~ + eA
a. Determine the Hamiltonian H = (−ih̄∇ ~ )2 /(2m) + V (ρ) in cylindrical coordinates.
b. Assume that the torus is so narrow that ρ can be taken as constant. Show that

H= Lz + ,
2mρ2 2π
where Lz = −ih̄ ∂/∂φ, and Φ is the magnetic flux. What are the energy eigenvalues?

3. Evaluate numerically the following quantities, without explicit use of the values of the constants in
the expressions in SI units:

a. The Bohr magnetron, µb = eh̄/(2me ) in eV/T.

b. The magnetic flux quantum, Φ = h/(2e) in Wb.
c. The Rydberg energy, Ry = me e4 /(820 h2 ) in eV.
