Research Problems:

1. “Lack of Vocabulary Foundation’s Effects on the Oral Communication Skills of

Korean ESL Students in Talkstation Banica”

Individuals who have difficulty using their vocabulary and semantic skills can often find
it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings successfully. This may be because they have
difficulty recalling the words they need; they don't understand the meanings of the words
they know; or they don't know many words at all. According to (Halik et al., 2021),
vocabulary plays a vital role in communication as it is the basis of all languages. It is the
building blocks that can be used to share information, express thought and build personal
relationships. Wider vocabulary supports the development of all four language skills and can
be a stepping stone to higher levels of fluency. Balqis (2018) further states that the learners
who have a lack of vocabulary cannot express their concepts as clearly, fluently as they want,
and also, they cannot understand the books which are written in English.
As an educator, I want to find out the effects of limited vocabulary foundation to
determine how serious it is when it comes to the communication skills of Korean ESL
students, especially that they are learning a language that has a very different structure to
their own language. Through systematic research and valid approaches, these concerns will
be addressed and it will enable me to deal with this so called deficiency in an appropriate
way that would benefit not only the ESL students, but the ESL teacher as well who are
dedicating themselves in propagating the English language to the world.

2. “Effects of Fear of Making Mistakes in Speaking on their Language Learning of

Korean ESL Students in Talkstation Banica”
Many ESL learners feel afraid of making mistakes when speaking because they fear
being judged or misunderstood by native speakers. Additionally, they may also have a lack of
confidence in their language abilities, or may have had negative experiences in the past when
attempting to speak. Amon g four skills of English, speaking plays a vital role in achieving
competence in the language. To speak effectively it is important first to acquire competence
and then perform (Sultana and Jamin, 2021). Foreign language anxiety (FLA) has been a
matter of considerable interest in language education setting for educators since it is a major
obstacle to foreign language learning that learners need to overcome (Wu, 2010 & Zheng,
2008).
For more than two years as an ESL teacher to Korean students, this is one of my concerns
with my students that I want to address and find out if it really hinders their English language
acquisition. It's important for English learners to remember that making mistakes is a natural
part of the learning process, and that it's important to practice and take risks in order to
improve their language skills.
