EINECS N° • 202-966-0
Name • Diphenylmethane- 4,4’-diisocyanate
% • 1%< C < 5%
Code letter • Xn
R Sentences • R40- R42/43
Hazard Description • Special hazard data for people and environment:
Contains isocyanates group
Harmful (Xn)
R40: Limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect
R42/43: May cause sensitization by inhalation and skin contact
Potential effects on health • This product is a respiratory irritating and a potential respiratory sensitizing:
an inhalation repeated by steam or by spray cans at the upper levels in the
limit value of exhibition on the workplace can cause a respiratory sensitization.
A hyper-reactive answer in an even trifling concentration of MDI can develop
at the sensitized person’s. The respiratory symptoms can appear only several
hours after exhibition. For more details, see section 11.
Note : please see section 15 for full text of the R-sentences

Section 4: First Aid Procedure

General information • Remove soiled or soaked clothing immediately.

After Inhalation • Remove to fresh air, keep calm, and get medical attention.
After Skin Contact • Immediately flush with plenty of cool water, remove contaminated clothes.
Safety Data Sheet 2037EU

After Eyes Contact • Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 min and get medical attention.
After Ingestion • Immediately flush mouth, avoid vomiting, drink plenty of water and get medical attention.

Section 5: Fire Fighting Procedure

Suitable • Foam, CO2, chemical powder, water spray (large quantities)

Extinguishing Media
Extinguishing media that • Water jet (chemical reaction)
should not to be used for
safety reasons
Special protective equipment: • In case of fire, hazardous combustion gases are formed: CO, CO2 and NOx. It is
advised, in the event of important fire, to use an autonomous respiratory protection.
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full face piece operated in
pressure demand or positive-pressure mode.

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

Personal precautions • Safety gloves (heat resistant gloves if product is hot, although nitrile or neoprene
gloves) and glasses. Room sufficiently ventilated/ with air extraction.
Environmental precautions • Do not allow to enter soil, waterways or waste water canal. In case of entry into
waterways, soil or drains, inform the responsible authorities.
Cleaning/Absorption • Spray with water for cooling and neutralizing the material.
procedure

Section 7: Handling and Storage

Handling • Avoid vapour inhalation. Prefer in closed apparatus any industrial operation
which lends itself to it. Install vapour aspiration to their source of emission, as
well as a general ventilation of the buildings. Carry adequate PPE (nitrile or
neoprene gloves …).
Storage • Keep in the original closed package in a dried place at a temperature below
25°C. Place must be well-ventilated. Keep away from acids, alcohol, bases,
amines and water.

Section 8: Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Ingredients and limits which need to be controlled with regard to their concentration at the working station:
Diphenylmethane- 4,4’-diisocyanate.
TLV-TWA (ACGIH) • 0.052 mg/m3 - 0.005 ppm.
TLV (Belgium) • 0.052 mg/m3 - 0.005 ppm
MEL-LTEL • 0.02 (-NCO) mg/m3
MEL-STEL • 0.07 (-NCO) mg/m3
MAK • 0.05 mg/m3
VME 8h • 0.1 mg/m3
Safety Data Sheet 2037EU

General protective and hygienic procedures:

Do not eat, drink or smoke at workplace. Do not breathe vapours. After work, wash hands with soap and water.

Registered procedures of monitoring:

A medical monitoring of all employees who manipulate or are in contact with respiratory sensibilisants is recommended.
The personnel having a past of asthmatic type, bronchitis or of cutaneous sensitizations should not work with products
based on MDI. The limit value of exposure does not apply to the individuals having been previously sensitized. These
already sensitized individuals must be exempted from any new exposure.

Controls of professional exposure:

Envisage a reinforced aeration or other systems of automatic controls inserted to support concentration of steam in
suspension in air lower in their respective borders of professional exposure. They can smell MDI only if the limit value
of exposure was considerably high.

Control of the action of the agents of environment:

It is important to test programs coming from systems of aeration or from the equipment of manufacture to assure you
that they comply with requirements of legislation on the protection of environment.

Respirator: Breathing apparatus (standard ABEK) in the event of prolonged exposure and/or insufficient aspiration.

Hands: Wear heat resistant gloves (or nitrile/neoprene gloves, correspondent to norm EN374). In cases of frequent
contact, a glove of protection of class 5 or superior must be use. In case of short contact, a glove with protection of
class 3 is recommended.

Eyes: Wear protective glasses.

Section 11: Toxicological Information

MDI : DL50 orale, rat : > 5000 mg/kg

Acute effect
After inhalation • Irritation of the respiratory tracts. Irritation of the nasal mucous membranes.
After eye contact • Irritation of the eye tissue
After skin contact • Skin irritation

Chronic effect • May cause sensitization by skin contact.

• May cause sensitization by inhalation

Section 12: Ecological Information

Daphnia magna (CE50) • 48 hour/hours : >1000 mg/l.

Slow reaction to water. Generates CO2 to form an insoluble polyurea. This product is inert and not degradeable.
Noticed ecotoxicity is very weak. A study on pond showed a big pollution without significant toxic effects on a
broad flower variety (including fish), not detectable MDA, and no proof of bioaccumulation of MDA or MDI.

Section 13: Disposal Considerations

Product • Can be deposed in a landfill or incinerated according to the local regulation.

Waste key No • The classification of the waste product is a local interpretation (in general: 08 01 11).
