Adult CPR Assessment Skills Description Effective date:
05/01/17

Trainee must perform all steps on the manikin just as if it was a real collapsed adult person.
The following outlines the criteria required to successfully demonstrate each step of the assessment of a
collapsed casualty.

Step Critical Step Description


1 Danger Ensure that the scene is safe.

Look around to assess the area for dangers and/or hazards which could cause
you or the casualty an injury.

Trainee can verbalise that the scene is safe.

2 Response Assess for verbal and physical response.

Trainee kneels close to the manikin, taps firmly on both shoulders and speaks
loudly in both ears: “Can you hear me?”

Trainee can verbalise that the casualty is not responsive.

3 Shout Shout for help.

Trainee to shout: “Help me! Get the senior and AED.”

4 Breathing Check for normal breathing.

Trainee to quickly scan the manikin’s chest by looking at it for at least 5 seconds
but no more than 10 seconds.

Trainee can verbalise that the casualty is not breathing.

5 CPR Start CPR as soon as possible starting with chest compressions.

Each CPR cycle is composed of 30 compressions and 2 breaths.

Trainee to shout: “I’m starting CPR, start the AED.”

6 Compressions Use two hands in the correct location to deliver 30 compressions.


Hand Location
Trainee to pretend moving clothes out of the way.

Put the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest between the nipples.

Place the heel of the other hand on top of the first.

Trainee to interlock fingers, lean over the casualty and lock elbows (if possible).

7 Delivers Use correct speed and depth to deliver chest compressions.
Effective
Compressions Compressions Trainee to use both hands on top of each other and push
depth straight down at least 5cm but no more than 6cm.

Trainee needs to achieve depth correctly for at least 23 out of


30 compressions.

Compressions Use correct speed to deliver 30 compressions (100 to 120


speed compressions per minute).

Trainee to give of 30 compressions in less than 18 seconds but


no faster than 15 seconds.

Trainee to ensure chest is coming back to normal position


after each compression (allow chest recoil).

8 Delivers Attempt 2 breaths using pocket mask with visible chest rise.

Breaths Pocket mask Put the pocket mask over the manikin’s nose and mouth with
use/seal the pointed end/tip over the nose.

Seal pocket mask tight by using your hands to secure all


around its margin.

Providing Open airway by tilting the head and lifting the chin and give
rescue breaths 2 breaths.

Deliver each breath over 1 second. Provide breaths quickly as


you can, in less than 10 seconds.

If the first breath is not effective, trainee may re-tilt the head
to ensure the airway is open before giving the second breath
(At least one breath should be effective).

9 2nd and 3rd Continue CPR until 3 cycles are completed.
