SECTION 1
SAFETY RULES

1.1 SAFETY RULES

The normal user of the device (communications operator) has no particular safety rule
to follow, since all commands are adequately insulated and protected from AC and DC
power sources.

It is advisable to read this manual thoroughly before attempting any operation on the
RPS-1124.

Technical personnel responsible for maintenance, before carrying out any operation
on the device, and before removing shielding, must disconnect the supply cable to avoid
electric shock hazard (the device is powered by 220 V ac nominal) and possible damage to
the device.

2.4 RPS-1124 POWER SUPPLY

2.4.1 DEVICE OVERVIEW

The RPS-1124 power supply is
intended to provide dc power to Elman
transceiver devices (especially RTV-1124
transceivers). Its main features are:
 29 Vdc (± 0.5 V) output voltage,
20 A maximum output current;
 two redundant PWS-1124
transformer/stabiliser modules (the
power supply keeps working with one
module, at a reduced maximum
power output);
 two possibilities for mains voltage input: 230 Vac ± 10% or 115 Vac 10%;
switching between these modes is dome manually by means of a switch located in the
PWS-1124 rear;
 auxiliary power supply from external battery (24 V dc) with hot switching (no
break) in case of mains failure and with battery charging when mains power is available.
The BCU-1124 module takes care of charging the batteries, to switch power source to
the batteries in case of mains failure, and to protect from overload both during battery
charge and while power is being drawn from the batteries to power the load.

The power supply contains overload and

short circuit protection via fuses on the mains
line (5 A) and on the dc outputs (each output is
protected by 16 A fuses). LED OPEN FUSE
indicators are provided.

The device includes BITE (Built In Test

Equipment) fault indicators to help in locating
possible faults.
The THU-1124 is a 19" rack frame 4U high.
The enclosure is completely built in aluminium, highly resistant to shock and vibration.
Its internal structure is fully modular, with separate, easily replaceable connectorised
modules, therefore making repair extremely easy.

SECTION 3
OPERATION

3.1 POWERING ON
To power on the supply, all the
switches located on the front panel (the
switches on the two PWS modules, the
switch on the BCU module and the main
switch on the GPM-124 module) must be
turned ON.

If the unit is powered from mains, all green LEDs will light up.
 “MAIN PW” LED on the PWS modules
 “CHARGER PW” LED on the PWS modules
 “POWER” LED on the BCU module
 “POWER” LED on the GPM module

Powering on of the BCU module is more complex and happens in 4 phases,

recognisable by the lighting of the front panel LEDs:
 All the LEDs, except "OPEN FUSE", turn on;
 One or more LEDs turn on showing the firmware version;
 Again, all LEDs turn on;
 Only the green "POWER" LED turns on and the BCU module operates fully.

3.1.1 OPERATION FROM MAINS

As said above, during operation from mains usually all green LEDs on the front panel
are lit. In this condition the power supply provides 29 V dc nominal voltage; maximum
output current is 16 A sustained and up to 20 A peak.
Faults are signalled by red LEDs on the front panel; see paragraph “3.2 - FAULTS” for
their meaning.

When operating from mains, the BCU module charges the backup batteries.
Battery charging is signalled by the yellow LED "CHARGE" on the BCU module front
panel. The LED meanings are as follows:

CHARGE LED BATTERY CHARGING

OFF Batteries are charged with a sustaining current < 1 A.
FLASHING Batteries are charged with a current between 1 A and 3 A.
(1/sec)
FLASHING Batteries are charged with a current between 3 A and 5 A.
(2/sec)
STEADY ON Batteries are charged with a current > 5 A.

RPS-1124 Power Supply User Manual (Ed. I rev. B) Page 13 of 19

If a current overload is detected during charging, this condition is signalled by the
OVERLOAD indication flashing.

3.1.2 OPERATION FROM BATTERY

If mains power fails, the power supply will automatically switch to battery mode
keeping the users connected powered without service interruption. In this condition the red
LED on the BCU front panel indicated with BATTERY MODE will light up.

Duration of the battery, of course, depends upon the battery capacity and the
powered devices' absorption.
The condition of battery fully depleted is signalled by the BITE LED flashing slowly (0.5
seconds lit every 3 seconds).

The BCU-1124 module takes care of charging the batteries, to switch power source to
the batteries in case of mains failure, and to protect from overload both during battery
charge and while power is being drawn from the batteries to power the load; these activities
are managed by a microprocessor.

When operating in battery mode, overload and short circuit conditions are
electronically checked. The overload condition is signalled by the steady lighting of the
OVERLOAD LED on the BCU module front panel. The system will periodically try restoring; it
will go back to normal operation if the overload condition has disappeared. See paragraph
“3.2 - FAULTS” for the fault and BITE indications.

3.1.3 MODULE HOT SWAPPING

The PWS-1124 and BCU-1124 modules can be hot-swapped in case of need and/or for
maintenance (that is, without removing supply from the other power supply components).
Act as follows to replace a module:
 Switch off the module to be replaced;
 Remove the module (after removing fastening screws);
 Insert the new module and switch it on.

RPS-1124 Power Supply User Manual (Ed. I rev. B) Page 14 of 19

3.2 FAULTS
Signalling of faults is carried out by lighting some red LEDs.
The table below lists possible faults and intervention required.

3.3 BCU-1124 MODULE FAULT SIGNALLING
The "BITE" LED stays steady on when the BCU-124 is faulty; this can happen in the
following conditions:
 While charging batteries (mains power present), after an overload in battery
charge has occurred for 4 times (battery short circuit).
 In battery mode (mains power absent), after an overload has occurred for 4 times
(load short circuit).
 When the heat sink temperature rises above 80 °C (switches off when this
temperature goes below 60 °C).
 When the battery temperature rises above 50 °C (switches off when this
temperature goes below 40 °C).

To understand the fault origin the other LEDs must be observed; in particular:
 If the fault was battery short circuit, the OVERLOAD LED will flash on for one
second and off for two seconds.
 If the fault was overload, the OVERLOAD LED will flash on for 125 ms and off for
two seconds.
 If the fault was high temperature (heat sink or battery), the BATT OVERLOAD
OVERLOAD LED will flash on for 125 ms and off for two seconds.
