Assignment - Chapter 13

1. A gas mixture consists of 1.4 kmol of oxygen, 1.4 kmol of carbon dioxide and 2.4 kmol of
helium. This mixture is heated in a 10 m3 rigid tank from an initial pressure of 1 MPa to a final
pressure of 5 MPa. Treating the gas mixture as ideal gas, determine:
a) the average molar mass of the mixture
b) the gas constant of the mixture
c) both of the specific heats of the mixture at room temperature
d) the heat transfer per unit mass during the heating process

2. A frictionless piston-cylinder device with a linear spring attached to the piston contains gases
of 0.5 kg Ne, 1.5 kg of O2 and 0.35 kg of N2. Initially the mixture is at 200 kPa, 10C and 0.1m3.
The gas is heated causing the piston to rise and compress the spring until the pressure is 500
kPa and the volume becomes 0.5 m3. By using constant specific heat at 300 K, determine:
a) the mass fraction of each component
b) the constant-volume specific heat of the mixture
c) final temperature of the mixture
d) total work and heat transfer for the process
