Running head: VISION SCREENING

Vision Screening

October 4th 2022

NURS 3710L

Youngstown State University

Observation: On Tuesday, October 4th I did a vision screening at Youngstown

Community School. The vision screening tested kids in grades Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 7th.

A variety of tests were given such as distance, depth perception and color blindness for the boys.

The children sat in chairs throughout the screening as we moved through each test. There were 6

stations and 3 of us to one child, one to document, one to explain the test and another to help

them as far as covering their eyes and making sure it was being done accurately. Some of the

kids were aware they did not have the best vision, other kids seemed nervous when trying to

identifying objects or letters. Our purpose was to not only get a baseline for their vision but to

ensure they felt comfortable and encouraged and not embarrassed if they could not see as well.

After testing their vision, the kids went to get their hearing checked by the school nurse

Objective: The objective met was examined health related issues that impact the

individual client and his or her family. Vision is very imperative especially in grade school. This

is the time where they are learning to read and write and if you cannot see, it can further delay

growth in the classroom. This objective was met because all kids in their designated grades were

tested for vision and hearing. This impacts the individual in many ways, one being that if they

cannot see what is going on or hear, they are most likely going to zone out and miss what is

being taught. This can also make students act out because they are not sure what to do fall behind

when they do not have to simply because they cannot see and are too afraid to tell someone. This

will also affect their families because they may not understand why their child is falling behind.

This may cause worry within families and have them reach out to physicians to have their child

tested for certain disorders like ADHD when they may not have to. This objective was also

addressed because further testing by the school’s nurse will be done to recheck and then

recommend them to optometrist to further get evaluated and fitted for glasses. There are certain
organizations they go through that gives the child 2 pairs of glasses, one for home and the other

to keep at school in case a pair gets lost.

Reflection: This clinical gave me insight on how many children may have problems

seeing in class. I don’t believe that it is an issue that they don’t want to see, I think it may be

harder for children to express that they cannot see so they choose to not say anything at all. I feel

like it is important for all grade school kids to have their vision screened every year. I have also

learned how to properly screen children and what test are appropriate for what grades and

gender.
