Bye Bye Plastic Bags
Plastic pollution is a major issue that has serious effects on land and at sea. Ecosystems and
wildlife suffer because of it. Nowadays, more and more people are trying to reduce the amount of
plastic they use, especially plastic bags which cause a lot of problems for marine animals. For
example, turtles often eat plastic bags because they look like jellyfish, which are their usual food.
More than a hundred nations have banned plastic bags, but some countries are slower than others
in making changes like this.
Bali has made the change thanks to two amazing teenage sisters called Melati and Isabel Wijsen.
With the help of their friends, they started a campaign called Bye Bye Plastic Bags in 2013 at the
ages of 10 and 12. They had a mission to fight the plastic pollution problem in Bali. The girls
started collecting signatures and soon they had over 100,000. After a year and a half, they finally
got to talk to the government which promised to help the people of Bali say no to plastic bags. In
2018, Bali completely banned plastic bags.
Today, the girls have gone on to inspire other people around the world. They travel and talk on
stage in many countries and Bye Bye Plastic Bags has become a global movement that educates
schoolchildren about the problems of plastic waste.

Water pollution is a problem, not only in our oceans due to plastic pollution, but also in our
drinking water due to chemicals. There are still some places where people don’t have access to
clean drinking water, but there are other places where the water looks clean enough to drink, but
it isn’t. This can be very dangerous and can cause serious health issues for people.
One amazing young girl decided to do something about it. When 12-year-old Gitanjali Rao from
the USA heard about the number of people who suffer from serious health problems because of
lead in their water, she decided to invent something to test if water is safe to drink. Her invention
is a device called Tethys and it is a low-cost water testing kit that people can use to find out if the
water they are about to drink is polluted or not. It is an electronic device which works through an
app on a smartphone via Bluetooth. You simply put part of it in the water to check. It works very
quickly and easily. Because of her invention, she was America’s Top Young Scientist of 2017 in
the Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
Gitanjali proves that kids can be part of the solution just as much as adults. We can all learn
something from her and look for ways to make everyone’s lives a little bit better.
1. A major problem today is plastic in our drinking water.
2. If someone’s drinking water looks clean, it is safe to drink.
3. Gitanjali got the name for her invention from a book.
4. The device works through an app.
5. Gitanjali won an award for her invention.
