PROCLAMATION INDONESIAN

On August 17, 1945, Sukarno and Hatta declared

the independence of Indonesia from the Dutch colonial
rule. They read the proclamation text in front of a large
crowd at Sukarno’s house in Jakarta.
The proclamation of Indonesian independence was the
result of a long struggle by the Indonesian people
against the Dutch colonialism that had lasted for more
than three centuries. During World War II, Japan
occupied Indonesia and promised to grant
independence after the war. However, Japan also
exploited the natural resources and forced labor of the
Indonesians. Many Indonesians joined the resistance
movement against Japan, while some cooperated with
Japan to prepare for independence.
When Japan surrendered to the Allies on August 15,
1945, Sukarno and Hatta saw an opportunity to seize
the moment and declare independence before the Allies
arrived. They drafted the proclamation text with the help
of some other nationalist leaders, such as Soebardjo
and Sayuti Melik. They also consulted with some
Japanese officials who agreed to support their move.
They chose Sukarno’s house as the venue for the
proclamation, as it was spacious and guarded by
Japanese soldiers.
