What Is War?
War is armed conflict between
several countries* or different groups
– political, religious, or racial.

Going to war is one of the most

serious decisions a government can
make. It can have catastrophic
consequences for whole countries,
particularly civilians.
Some people, however, regard it as a
necessary evil.

*There can, however, be a war

between groups within a country.
Why Do Wars Happen?
One reason war can happen is economics.

Money, and the resources that generate it, can

often cause conflict between countries.
Countries may argue over important resources
(such as oil) or be envious of the wealth
another country has. This seemingly simple
disagreement can escalate into armed conflict
involving thousands of people.
Why Do Wars Happen?
Another reason war can happen is nationalism.

This is where someone, usually a leader, feels

their country or ethnic group is superior to
others. This can lead to war as they feel they
need to prove this superiority and be dominant
over others.
Why Do Wars Happen?
Another reason for war is ideological, or political, differences.

People often have radically different political

views. Sometimes, these cannot be resolved
peacefully through voting. This can lead to them
spilling over and turning into war.
Why Do Wars Happen?
A final reason for war is religion.

This can be a cause of war as people of

different faiths have different beliefs. This
can cause tension, which can then turn into
violence.

In groups of four: Match each cause

to the correct definition.

Ideology - Nationalism -Economics - Religion

correct cards about the causes of war.

The Ideology is divided into 3 types:

1. Nationalism: is an ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to

a nation or nation-state and holds that such obligations outweigh other
individual or group interests.

2. Communism: is an economic ideology that advocates for a classless society in

which all property and wealth are communally-owned, instead of by individuals.

3. Capitalism: is often thought of as an economic system in which private actors

own and control property in accord with their interests, and demand and supply
freely set prices in markets in a way that can serve the best interests of society.
