The following exercises are designed to help you become aware of the significance of various
dimensions around you. You see these dimensions every day, but perhaps you never looked at them
with the eyes of an engineer. Measure and discuss the significance of the dimensions of the
following items.

a. The dimensions of your living room


b. The window dimensions
c. The width, height, and thickness of your apartment doors or dormitory doors
d. The dimensions of your desk

Problem 2 [5 marks]

Investigate the size of the main waterline in your neighborhood. What are the inside and outside
diameters? What is the nominal size of the pipe? What is the cross-sectional area of water flow?
Investigate the size of piping used in your home. Write a brief memo to your instructor discussing
your findings.

Problem 3 [5 marks]

Investigate the size of pipes used in transporting natural gas to your state. What are the inside and
outside diameters of the pipe? What is the distance between boosting stations? What is the cross-
sectional area of the pipe? Write a brief memo to your instructor discussing your findings.

Problem 4 [5 marks]

What is the operating wavelength range for the following items?


a. A cellular phone
b. FM radio transmissions
c. Satellite TV broadcasting
