THREE DECADES 2024 990 DUKE
THE
SNIPER
First launched almost two decades
ago, the 990 Duke has come full circle
ack in 2005, the 990cc was the first Super
Duke, but here we are some 19 years
later and the so-called midsized Duke
has reached the capacity of the original
Super Duke. Back then it made 89kW
(119hp), now it makes 92kW (123hp). To
be honest I expected more, however the
new Duke is about 12kg lighter, way more efficient
and would run rings around the old V-twin.
After recently giving an 890 Duke R a good
thrashing through some of my local twisties, I was
pretty keen to see how KTM would improve on
the already excellent package for the Duke’s 30th
birthday. I expected some minor changes but was
quite shocked to find that the 990 has received the
highest amount of changes in the fleet – with KTM
claiming 96 percent of its parts are new.
Obviously KTM didn’t need to reinvent the
wheel here, but it has gone hard on the updates.
The chassis has been stiffened significantly for

making a stiffer frame can reduce traction, so the

swingarm has been redesigned as an enclosed-
lattice design that is 1.5kg lighter and reduces

The chassis now runs down the outside of the
swingarm pivot, rather than inside as on the 890,
which makes the bike feel slightly wider at the
footpegs. The aim of these frame and swingarm
changes is to maintain the 890’s agility but
introduce some stability that was lacking. The rear
subframe is now a cast item integrated with the
airbox and air intake (under the seat) to reduce
weight and the number of parts.
The LC8c parallel-twin engine has been revised
to meet strict Euro5+ emissions while maintaining
the power and torque we all want. It has more
aggressive cams and longer valve openings, while
being smoothed out by increasing the rotating
masses. The full stainless exhaust system features
a more conventional-looking side-mounted muffler
to mimic the aggressive stance of the Super Duke R

while meeting emissions requirements.
As ever, the suspension is WP Apex equipment.
Similar to the 390 Duke the open-cartridge fork
features five clicks of compression and rebound up
front. At the rear you’ve got C-spanner adjustable
preload and five clicks of rebound. KTM assures
us that less clicks doesn’t reduce the window
of adjustment, it just makes each click more
noticeable. I could have wound some preload
on the rear for my weight but, other than that,
it felt well sorted. After all, the suspension has

BEAST
The flagship Duke is a snarling tech-

he Super Duke R is the big daddy of the
Duke crew, all 1350cc of it. Born as a
hypernaked rather than a converted
superbike, it is as intimidating as they
come, made for the racetrack but allowed
on the road. The 1390 has received the
least amount of the updates thrown
around the Duke garage. But the changes are
significant. The official number is 60 percent new
parts. The frame and swingarm are unchanged
with the bulk of the changes made to the engine,
electronics, bodywork and suspension.
Its heart and soul is the updated LC8 V-twin.
The goal was to increase power without weight to
reach a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio while not losing
THE 1390 HAS RECEIVED THE LEAST the Super Duke’s character. Throw in Euro5+
requirements and this became a serious mission.

to 1350cc, then an all-new cam-shift system was

CHANGES ARE SIGNIFICANT revs, essentially boosting power across the whole
rev range with little added weight and meeting
emissions targets. The LC8 now cranks out 142kW
(190hp) and 145Nm – a boost of 7.5kW (10hp) and
5Nm over the 1290. And KTM is so sure of the
engine’s reliability it has stretched the first valve
clearance check to an incredible 60,000km.
Feeding the new engine is a redesigned airbox
with shorter throttle bodies and ram-air system.
The throttle body diameters were increased 4mm
to 60mm and the top injector repositioned for
better fuel mixing through the rev range. Also
helping in emissions targets is a revised fifth
and sixth gear ratio to keep the revs lower while
cruising. There is also a 14mm wider radiator
tucked under the new body work.
The suspension is updated WP Apex. The front
fork is a 48mm open-cartridge unit with preload,
compression and rebound adjustment, tuned for
high-speed stability and low-speed agility. The
rear shock features a piggyback-style reservoir and
has high- and low-speed compression adjustments
as well as rebound and hydraulic preload.
The wheels remain unchanged, but KTM has
changed to Michelin Power GP tyres. These offer
a 1.2kg (unsprung) weight saving, a performance
increase (in the wet and the dry) while also
reducing heat-up times. In the braking department,
Brembo’s top-shelf Stylema monobloc calipers get
the job done up front and they have been paired
with a new Brembo MCS master cylinder allowing
ratio changes as well as lever adjustment. Also
from Brembo is an updated clutch master cylinder

Feeling pretty comfortable with the suspension,

attention to rider comfort. When I first started
riding the seat was in the optional higher
(880mm) setting, so halfway through the ride I
changed it over to the lower setting (860mm) and
never went back, as the lower setting suited my
177cm stature perfectly and made getting my feet
on the ground that much easier.
For 2024, Triumph has shifted the handlebar
15mm rearward toward the rider. Even though I

– the ’bar is in a comfortable position for both
