5 Everyday Expressions You Can Start Using
TODAY!

1) ‘I can’t be bothered…’
= I don’t have enough energy to go somewhere / do
something.
I said: ‘‘After a hard day of teaching, I just can’t be
bothered to go for a run!’
Tips:
- Try saying this when you feel too tired to do
something!
- This is very informal!
- We often say, 'I can't be bothered', but we don’t
tend to say 'I can be bothered'.

2) ‘I tell a lie’
= I accidentally just told you a lie and have only just
realised.
I said: ‘‘Sorry mate, but we don’t actually have any
scampi… Oh wait, I tell a lie. It’s right here’

Tips:
- This is only used if the ‘lie’ was accidental (you
were mistaken).
- Try saying ‘oh’ before ‘I tell a lie’ to sound extra
Bri’ish!

3) ‘The other day’

= An unspecified day that happened anytime between
2 days to 2 months ago (roughly).
I said: ‘I was watching a video the other day...’
Tip:
- When talking about a past event, try saying 'it
happened the other day!'

4) ‘Time is of the essence’

= We need to do this quickly, as there is a deadline
approaching. Time is a factor.
I said: ‘We need to make a reservation, and they will
be fully booked soon. So, time is of the essence!’
Tip:
- Try saying this to express urgency when
something needs to be done quickly!

= People with similar personalities tend to hang

was being very indecisive’
Tip:

why we are friends.

6) ‘No word of a lie’

= Something is 100% true. Not even one word of it is a
lie.
I said: ‘I was playing darts, and no word of a lie, my
mate threw his dart right on top of my one!’
Tips:
- ‘The boozer’ is British slang for the pub.
- Try using this before or after you say something
that is true but may sound unbelievable!
Example paragraph:
The other day I thought to myself... Wow. I just can't
be bothered to do anything today. Oh wait, I tell a lie.

film this lovely video for you all. As you may know,
time is of the essence when it comes to uploading
new videos. Luckily, my friend was able to help me
out with this one - he is just as determined as I am. I
guess birds of a feather really do flock together.
Anyway, no word of a lie, but I actually filmed this all
in 1 take. It normally takes me much longer. To
celebrate, I might have to head down the boozer for a
couple. Anyway, cheers for watching!
