DECODING

Coding The word 'coding' stands for


converting a word from English language into a
certain pattern or expression. Therefore, code is a
sequence of letters/numbers, which is used in place
of the original word/series of numbers that is coded.

Decoding The word decoding refers to the


process of converting the code back to the original
word.

Letter Coding In these type of coding, the letters
in a word are replaced by certain other letters
according to a specific rule to form its code. You are
required to detect the coding pattern/rule and
answer the questions accordingly.

e.g.
In a certain code language 'RENOWNED' is written
as 'DEENNORW'. How is 'INFORMATION' written in
that Code?

Number Coding In number coding, numerical
code is assigned to the word or alphabetical letters.
e.g.

Substitution Coding In this type of coding, a
confusing code is provided by giving a different
name for the words.
e.g.
If 'field' is called 'barn', 'barn' is called 'computer',
'computer' is called 'ox', 'ox' is called 'plough', 'plough'
is called 'pipe' and 'pipe' is called 'fruit,' then which is
used for high speed calculation?
Sol.
High speed calculation is done with computer.
Computer is called ox. So, the answer is ox.

Deciphering message Coding In this type of
coding, some messages are provided in the code
language and some codes are assigned to each
word of the messages.
e.g.
In a certain code language, '134' means 'good and
tasty', '478' means 'see good pictures' and '729'
means 'pictures are faint'. Which of the following
digits stands for 'see'?

478 → see good pictures
729 → pictures are faint
4 → good, 7→pictures
