Notable receive issues

Security Level: Customer Verbal Use

Date Written/Updated: 23 July 2008
Document Summary
 Potential cause of send / receive issues.

Issue Description:
An issue with fax sub system has been observed when the incoming fax call is
answered during a ring cycle. The fax sub system firmware had not been
optimized to block the spike in current from the internal component and damaging
it, when the phone line is taken off hook (answer) during an incoming call. The
following situations may be observed when the component has been damaged:

Fax Send - Tone dial mode - The sending unit will go off-hook and sound like it
dialed the number, and start sending CNG tone bursts. But the tone dialing is not
working so the central office will not detect the phone number and will time out.
The unit will time out with a No Answer.

Fax Send - Pulse dial mode - The sending unit will go off-hook, dial the number and
start sending CNG tone bursts. When the unit connects with the receiving unit it
will display Connecting. It will be unable to transmit its DCS message, giving a
timeout and Comm Error 101.

Fax Receive - Auto mode - The unit will recognize the incoming ring, sound the
ring alerter, display incoming call, and go off-hook at the appropriate ring count.
It will not be able to send a “ready to receive” message to the sender. It will
timeout with a No Fax Detected message on the display. In this product, the “no
fax detected” error will not be included in the fax log report.

Fax Receive - TAM mode - The unit will recognize the incoming ring and sound the
ring alerter. After the TAM picks up the call the CNG detection will work, the unit
will go off hook and attempt to initiate a fax receive, but will not be able to
transmit the DIS message. The display will say incoming call. The unit will time
out with a No Fax Detected on the display.

Fax Receive - Fax/Tel mode - The unit will recognize the incoming ring and go off
hook, then will immediately go on-hook. It will not show any indication on the
display.

Solution or Workaround:

There are two potential resolutions to the issue.

1. Replace the DAA (Fax card) however; the issue may reoccur due to firmware
issues.
2. The issue will be fixed in an upcoming firmware release in August 2008. This
“notable” paper will be updated or removed when the firmware datecode is
available.
