“You are not attending!” said the Mouse
to Alice severely. ‘“‘ What are you thinking of ?”
“I beg your pardon,” said Alice very humbly:
“you had got to the fifth bend, I think? ”
““T had not!” cried the Mouse sharply, and
very angrily.
“A knot!” said Alice, always ready to make
herself useful, and looking anxiously about her.
“Oh, do let me help to undo it!”
“T shall do nothing of the sort,’”’ said the
Mouse, getting up and walking away. ‘ You
insult me by talking such nonsense ! ”’
“T didn’t mean it! ’’ pleaded poor Alice. “ But
you are so easily offended, you know!”’
The Mouse only growled in reply.
‘Please come back and finish your story!”
Alice called after it, and the others all joined in
chorus, “‘ Yes, please do!’’ but the Mouse only
shook its head impatiently and walked a little
quicker.
“What a pity it wouldn’t stay!” sighed the
Lory, as soon as it was quite out of sight; and
an old Crab took the opportunity of saying to her
daughter,‘‘Ah, my dear! Let this be a lesson to you
never to lose your temper!” ‘‘ Hold your tongue,
Ma!” said the young Crab, a little snappishly.
“ You're enough to try the patience of an oyster!”
“ [ wish I had our Dinah here, I know I do!”
said Alice aloud, addressing nobody in particular.
“She’d soon fetch it back!”

“ And who is Dinah, if I might venture to ask
the question ?” said the Lory.
Alice replied eagerly, for she was always ready
to talk about her pet; “ Dinah’s our cat. And
she’s such a capital one for catching mice, you
can’t think! And oh, I wish you could see her
after the birds! Why, she’ll eat a little bird as
soon as look at it!”
This speech caused a remarkable sensation
among the party. Some of the birds hurried off
at once: one old Magpie began wrapping itself
up very carefully, remarking, “I really must be
getting home; the night-air doesn’t suit my
throat !’’ and a Canary called out in a trembling
voice to its children, ““Come away, my dears!
It’s high time you were all in bed!” On various
pretexts they all moved off, and Alice was soon
left alone.
‘““T wish I hadn’t mentioned Dinah!” she said
to herself in a melancholy tone. “ Nobody seems
to like her, down here, and I’m sure she’s the
best cat in the world! Oh, my dear Dinah! I
wonder if I shall ever see you any more!” And
here poor Alice began to cry again, for she felt
very lonely and low-spirited. In a little while,
however, she again heard a little pattering of
footsteps in the distance, and she looked up
eagerly, half hoping that the Mouse had changed
his mind, and was coming back to finish his
story.
CHAPTER IV
“ You are old,” said the youth, “‘ and your jaws are
too weak
For anything tougher than suet ;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the
beak—
Pray, how did you manage to do it?”

““* Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose.”

violent blow underneath her chin; it had struck
her foot !
She was a good deal frightened by this very
sudden change, but she felt that there was no
time to be lost, as she was shrinking rapidly ; so
she set to work at once to eat some of the other
bit. Her chin was pressed so closely against her
foot, that there was hardly room to open her
mouth; but she did it at last, and managed to
swallow a morsel of the left-hand bit.

said the Hatter; ‘‘so I should think you could
draw treacle out of a treacle-well—eh, stupid ? ”
‘But they were im the well,” Alice said to the
Dormouse, not choosing to notice this last remark.
“Of course they were,” said the Dormouse ;—
* well in,”
This answer so confused poor Alice, that she
let the Dormouse go on for some time without
interrupting it.
“ They were learning to draw,’’ the Dormouse
went on, yawning and rubbing its eyes, for it was
getting very sleepy ; “‘ and they drew all manner
of things—everything that begins with an M——”’
“Why with an M?”’ said Alice.
“Why not?” said the March Hare.
Alice was silent.
The Dormouse had closed its eyes by this
time, and was going off into a doze; but, on
being pinched by the Hatter, it woke up again
with a little shriek, and went on: “‘ That begins
with an M, such as mouse-traps, and the moon,
and memory, and muchness—you know you say
things as “much of a muchness ’—did you ever
see such a thing as a drawing of a muchness ? ”’
“ Really, now you ask me,” said Alice, very
much confused, “‘I don’t think—-—’”’
“Then you shouldn’t talk,” said the Hatter.
This piece of rudeness was more than Alice
could bear: she got up in great disgust, and walked

off; the Dormouse fell asleep instantly, and
neither of the others took the least notice of her
going, though she looked back once or twice, half
hoping that they would call after her: the last time
she saw them, they were trying to put the Dor-
‘mouse into the teapot.
“ At any rate I’ll never go there again!”’ said
Alice, as she picked her way through the wood.
“It’s the stupidest tea-party I ever was at in all
my life!”
Just as she said this, she noticed that one of
the trees had a door leading right into it. “ That’s
very curious!”’ she thought. ‘‘ But everything’s
curious to-day. I think I may as well go in at
once.”’ And in she went.
Once more she found herself in the long hall,
and close to the little glass table. “Now, I'll
manage better this time,” she said to herself, and
began by taking the little golden key, and unlocking
the door that led into the garden. Then she set
to work nibbling at the mushroom (she had kept
a piece of it in her pocket) till she was about
a foot high: then she walked down the little
passage: and then—she found herself at last in
the beautiful garden, among the bright flower-
beds and the cool fountains.

“Each with a lobster as a partner!” cried the
Gryphon.
‘‘ Of course,” the Mock Turtle said; “ advance
twice, set to partners——”
‘Change lobsters, and retire in same order,”
continued the Gryphon.
‘Then, you know,” the Mock Turtie went on,
“you throw the——”
“The lobsters!” shouted the Gryphon, with
a bound into the air.
“As far out to sea as you can——’
“Swim after them!’ screamed the Gryphon.
“Turn a somersault m the sea!” cried the
Mock Turtle, capering wildly about.
“Change lobsters again!” yelled the Gry-
phon.
“ Back to land again, and—that’s all the first
figure,’’ said the Mock Turtle, suddenly dropping
his voice; and the two creatures, who had been
jumping about like mad things all this time, sat
down again very sadly and quietly, and looked
at Alice.
“It must be a very pretty dance,” said Alice
timidly.
“Would you like to see a little of it?” said
the Mock Turtle.
“Very much indeed,” said Alice.

“Come, let’s try the first figure!” said the
Mock Turtle to the Gryphon. ‘“‘ We can do it
without lobsters, you know. Which shall sing ? ”
“Oh, you sing,” said the Gryphon. “I’ve
forgotten the words.”
So they began solemnly dancing round and
round Alice, every now and then treading on her
toes when they passed too close, and waving their
fore paws to mark the time, while the Mock
Turtle sang this, very slowly and sadly:

Humpty Dumpty took the book, and looked at

it carefully. ‘‘ That seems to be done right——”
he began.
“You're holding it upside down!” Alice inter-
rupted.
“To be sure I was!” Humpty Dumpty said
gaily, as she turned it round for him. “I thought
it looked a little queer. As I was saying, that
seems to be done right—though I haven’t time to
look it over thoroughly just now—and that shows
that there are three hundred and sixty-four days
when you might get un-birthday presents——”
“ Certainly,’ said Alice.
“ And only one for birthday presents, you know.
There’s glory for you!”
“I don’t know what you mean by ‘ glory,’”
Alice said.
Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. “ Of
course you don’t—till I tell you. I meant ‘ there’s
a nice knock-down argument for you!’ ”
“But ‘glory’ doesn’t mean ‘a nice knock-
down argument,’ ’’ Alice objected.
“When J use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said
in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I
choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”
“The question is,’ said Alice, “ whether you
can make words mean so many different things.”
‘The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty,
“which is to be Master—that’s all.”
Alice was too much puzzled to say anything,
so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again.

“Well, ‘shthy’ means ‘lithe and _ slimy.’
‘Lithe’ is the same as ‘active.’ You see it’s like
a portmanteau—there are two meanings packed
up into one word.”
“IT see it now,” Alice remarked thoughtfully:

“and what are ‘toves’?”’
“ Well, ‘toves’ are something like badgers—
they’re something like lizards—and they’re some-
thing like corkscrews.”
‘They must be very curious-looking creatures.”
“They are that,” said Humpty Dumpty:

“also they make their nests under sundials—also
they live on cheese.”
“ And what’s to ‘gyre’ and to ‘ gimble’?”’
“To ‘gyre’ is to go round and round like a
gyroscope. To ‘gimble’ is to make holes like a
gimlet.”
“ And ‘the wade,” is the grass-plot round a
sundial, I suppose ?’”’ said Alice, surprised at her
own ingenuity.
“ Of course it is. It’s called ‘ wabe,’ you know,
because it goes a long way before it, and a long
way behind it
“ And a long way beyond it on each side,” Alice
added.
“Exactly so. Well then ‘ mimsy’ is ‘ flimsy
and miserable’ (there’s another portmanteau for
you). And a ‘ borogove’ is a thin shabby-looking
bird with its feathers sticking out all round—some-
thing like a live mop.”
“And then ‘ mome raths’?”’ said Alice. “ I’m
afraid I’m giving you a great deal of trouble.”
“Well, a ‘rath’ is a sort of green pig: but
“mome’ I’m not certain about. I think it’s short
‘from home ’—meaning that they'd lost their
way, you know.”
“And what does ‘ outgrabe’ mean?”
“Well, ‘ outgribing’ is something between bel-
lowing and whistling, with a kind of sneeze in the
middle: however, you'll hear it done, maybe—
down in the wood yonder—and when you've once

neard it you'll be gutte content. Who’s been
“epeating all that hard stuff to you?”
“T read it in a book,” said Alice. ‘‘ But I had
some poetry repeated to me, much easier than
that, by—Tweedledee, I think.”
“As to poetry, you know,” said Humpty
Dumpty, stretching out one of his great hands,
“*T can repeat poetry as well as other folk, if it
mes to that .
“Oh, it meedn’t come to that!” Alice
thastily said, hoping to keep him from begin-
‘ning.
“The piece I’m going to repeat,” he went on,
without noticing her remark, “‘ was written entirely
for your amusement.”
Alice felt that in that case she really ought to
listen to it, so she sat down, and said, “ Thank
you” ,
rather sadly.

“Hatta went on with his bread-and-butter
