PROJECT DETAILS

1. ORGANIZATION INTRODUCTION
NSS Polytechnic College, Pandalam spreads its charm and beauty by moulding technicians of repute ,
spreading over the entire globe , serving for the technological excellence , from the establishment year
1958 onwards. One of the oldest Grant – in – aid Polytechnic College , started by the legend
BHARATHA KESARI PADMABHUSHAN SRI. MANNATHU PADMANABHAN under the banner of
NAIR SERVICE SOCIETY , with a view to effect commendable changes in the field of technical
education.

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
There were many problems before applying for 5’S in laboratory.

i) Improve the storage capacity of raw material.

ii) Waste of time due to lack of arrangement.
iii) Low productivity due to the environment of the floor.
iv) Presence of unwanted materials.
v) No well defined place for the instruments.
vi) Dusty work place.

LAYOUT OF CURRENT CM LAB

10
NSS PTC PANDALAM MINOR PROJECT 2023

S1 – SORT
When the first S applies , we have to create laboratory map which tells everything about the construction
materials laboratory. It will helps to focus and plan a stage

1. For setting up of lab as per standards.

2. How much fund we need.
3. What time it needed.

Before implementation , we had made two types of tags.

1. Needed TAG
2. Unneeded TAG
Needed TAG : This tag is used to identify the needed material which we will go to use
in the present months this is in green are created.
Unneeded TAG : This tag is used to identify unwanted things that are in the workplace.
This tag is divided into 2 parts.
Yellow TAG : This tag is given to thing which we will need after sometime.
Red TAG : This tag is given to things which are unwanted to laboratory or college.

GUIDELINES OF SORT
Step 1 : Launch tags in the project in order format in the map of the department and
define the workplace where to start.
Step 2 : Remove unwanted things from a workplace.
Step 3 : Identify the tags and where to use and for what to see.
Step 4 : Assign tags to the boxes .
Step 5 : Forward the box to the checker and he will verify the thing which is in the box
and sign the tag.
Step 6 : Maintain the record of all the things which are in yellow , red , green tags
because it will help in the future to find it out.
Step 7 : Keep the yellow tag boxes in the store room.
Step 8 : Throw unnecessary items which cannot fit in the red tag also keep the red tag
boxes in red tag area and put the list of all things before entering in the retag
area which will help the person to find things which are not needed.

NSS PTC PANDALAM MINOR PROJECT 2023

S2 – SET IN ORDER

This is second process of 5S . In this method we have the analysis of the stored items from the laboratory and is
put it in box. In this process every member has been given a training and motivated them to do this process. As
we all know that S2 improve the work place visual management . This process is invented by Van pattern 2006.
Some guidelines were provided to staff members in this process. It encourages the efficiency , safety , effective
store team.

GUIDELINES S2
1. Put the name .

2. Make a fix box or line where we have to put the object like cupboard , and , etc.

3. Visual control.

4. Do not keep the item like rack and shelf together.

12
NSS PTC PANDALAM MINOR PROJECT 2023

S3 – SHINE

This process helps us to establish a good environment which lead to an improvement in work. We have done to
maintain the best environment by S3 process . Like this we can clean every corner of the college.
This process is done by every member in the squad which lead to better teamwork. Two things were achieved
during this process.
i. 5S zone

ii. 5S schedules

The 5S zone makes a list of people who are responsible for their workplace. In 5S schedules makes a
timetable on the day or time this process will happen.

13
NSS PTC PANDALAM MINOR PROJECT 2023

S4 – STANDARDIZATION
S4 process is used for making a standardization in the lab which leads to good working condition of 5S . How to
apply this process in college we have to make some rules like day wise cleaning chart which is filled by the
cleaning staff and attested by head of the department. This chart helps cleaning in the college and also maintains
in the laboratory by this S4 process. We have to have regular maintenance of laboratory in daily routine in this
process.

S5 – SUSTAIN
Sustain is used to maintain the 5S in college , but how we will maintain this process in college is explained by
following steps we have done.
1. Training the employees and make awareness about the 5S.

2. Making the habit of continual improvement.

3. Maintain the standardization.

4. Making team for monitoring the process of 5S and making sure it is maintained due to the monitoring

process.

As we all know that every process is easy to implement , but it is hard to maintain this process , we will apply
some rule in it because of this we can maintain the process.

MAINTENANCE OF BENCH VICE

The following are some maintenance tips for bench vices:

1. Check whether the bench joints are lubricated or not. If not, then try to lubricate them at the right time.

2. Ensure to clean the dust from the bench vice for its long-lasting service life.

3. You can use machine oil to prevent vice from rust.

4. While oiling the vice, move the vice, so oil reaches other parts of the vice.

5. Make sure to repaint the vice when its color fades.

6. Bring the jaws together and keep the handle in the vertical direction if you are not using the vice.

21
NSS PTC PANDALAM MINOR PROJECT 2023

CALIBRATION OF SPRAY GUN

1. Select the volume of water you want your sprayer to apply. Use the pesticide label as a guide. Most
labels will state spray volume on a per-acre or per-1,000 ft2 basis.

2. Spray a 1,000 ft2 test course using water only. To determine how far to walk, measure your spray gun's
swath width at a pace and arm motion with which you are comfortable. Measuring swath width is
easiest on dry pavement where a water film is visibly evident. Dry pavement will also allow you to
check for uniformity of application.

3. Determine the amount of time that it takes to walk the test course using a stopwatch or watch with a
second hand. Twice to obtain an average time.

4. Determine the gallons sprayed per 1,000 ft2 by catching the sprayer output in a bucket for 36 seconds
and then measure in a graduated measuring container .

5. Determine the amount of pesticide to add to the spray tank. For example, let us assume you are going to
be treating centipede grass and hybrid bermuda grass lawns.

5a. Determine the total number of square feet that 100 gallons will treat. In other terms, it may be
easier to think of this as the number of 1,000 ft2-sections a full tank will treat: 100 gallons ÷ 2.5

gallons/1,000 ft2 = 40 1,000 ft2 sections, or 40,000 ft2.

5b. Measure and add the product to the tank: 40 1,000 ft2 sections x 1.0 oz/1,000 ft2 = 40 ounces of

product to mix a full 100-gallon tank.
