THEORY AND DISCUSSION

Analysis on the book cover

Illustration, color and typography

The base color that ‘Bumi’ used is dark green, which usually represents peace,
ambition, refreshment, security and wealth, along with taints of pale gold that means
knowledge, magic and wisdom. Fitting perfectly for the richness on the story, where
we got introduce by plenty of varies character and story background itself in first
prologue and starting story of the ‘Bumi series’
And the illustration of two cats with black and white color. It’s Raib’s pet cat, si Putih
and si Hitam. Which apparently have quite major appearance in the series, especially
for si Putih who have his own book with the same title in ‘Bumi series’
Underneath the cats, we can see a person in train and a book, the train represent a
scene where Raib, along with her two friends and the famous designer, Ilo, helped
them escaping the main city of ‘Bulan’ clan during an immediate emergency change
of it’s government and the soldiers where after Raib and friends. And the book
representing Raib’s ‘Book of Life’ that she’s possess and the important object during
the series adventures, specifically used to teleporting Raib and her friends to various
location on the story.

You can see also there’s slight pattern of weird housing with round shape, that’s the
‘Bulan’ clan building design in their environments on the book that where described
as ‘houses that are build high underground and have round shape on it.’ And the last,
a huge bear on the top left corner, the bear actually represents Ali’s capability to
transforms into a bear if he’s under emotional pressure. Making him also very
exceptionally strong among Raib and Seli with his mysterious capability.
And last, typography used for the title, it seems that the font used for ‘Bumi’ are
exclusively made only for this book series. And as seen despite it looks almost
calligraphic-ish, the main base of the font used are sans-serif and a little touch of
decorative style on it. Giving the series title aesthetic-ish feels along with modern
approach thanks to the font. And for the writer title name, it uses serif type of font,
very stylish and classic feelings came from it, along with it’s easy to be read with.

CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION

Within this paper and the analysis that have been done, it’s proofed that book cover
design are mostly inspired heavily to what the said books offers in it, in the form of little
hints on the design that later becomes the plot point inside the story, especially for novels.
Book designing is very important in order to attract the readers to be curious about
what the book offers just by looking into its cover design, that’s why designing a good book
cover are important. Other than it looks attractive and aesthetic to whoever buys the book, it
also gave easter egg for the story in it by showing some key plot hints onto the covers, that
alone will made the readers also fascinated and appreciates the book cover even more.
