Crews of the U.S. Army's new
Armored Gun System (AGS) will be able
to accurately "shoot on the move" at
long-range enemy targets, day or night
and through smoke or dust, using a fire
control sight developed by Hughes
Aircraft Company. Hughes will provide
the AGS gunner's primary sight for the
program to system prime contractor
FMC Corporation.
The AGS is a light tank designed for
infantry and airborne units that might be
inserted rapidly into a crisis situation. It
has a three man crew, autoloader for the
(HIRE), the laser rangefinder from the
U.S. Army's M1 Abrams tank, and the
line of sight stabilization platform for the
South Korean K1 tank.
HJRE is a high performance thermal
imaging system that provides an
operational capability comparable to
systems on the world's modern main
battle tanks.
The AGS sight is based on the
Hughes-developed sight selected for the
U.S. Marine Corps LAV-105. It has the
same modularity features that allow for
applications for other armored vehicles f

main gun and high survivability features.
The AGS is air-transportable, and if
necessary, air-droppable from U.S. Air
Force C-130 aircraft.
"Off the shelf" Hughes components
include Hughes Infrared Equipment
such as the M60 tank. Life cycle costs
for other vehicle applications are
minimized due to existing production
programs, commonality of repair
facilities, tests sets, training programs
and spares.
