A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN INTENDED FOR GRADE 9
Cooperating Teacher: Cherry Jane Lajara
Subject: Math
Topic: Proportion
Duration: 3 hours/1 Day
Grade Level: Grade 9 Junior High School
I. OBJECTIVES
Identify proportion, mean and extremes
Solve the missing term in a proportion by the use of cross-product
Value the importance of a proportion in real-situations
II. SUBJECT MATTER
a. Topic: Proportion
b. Reference: Mathematics Grade 9
c. Materials: Powerpoint presentation, Tv, Chalk and Board
d. Subject Integration: T.L.E
e. Strategies: 4A’s Approach (Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, Application)
III. Procedures
a. Daily Routine
Opening Prayer
Checking the attendance
b. Activity/Motivation
The teacher will give the quiz
yesterday and the student will check
it. (The student will check the quiz yesterday)
c. Analysis/Discussion
What is ratio?
Ratio is the comparison between
quantities of the same units. The
ratio an be represented in four ways
and can be written as:
a
a to b, a:b, a/b,
b
Example:
1. In this class, What is the ratio of
boys to girls?
2. How about the ratio of grade 9
Courage teacher to the number of
girls?
3. Find the ratio of 1 meter to 20
centimeter?
1meter= 100 centimeter
What is proportion?
A proportion is the equality between
two ratios. If ratios a:b and c:d are equal, the
proportion formed can be written in two ways:
a c
a:b or =
b d
and is read as “a is to b as c is to d”
Each quantity in proportion is called term of the
proportion. Thus in the proportion a, b, c and d
are terms, b and c are called means while a and d
are called extremes.
Example:
The equation 2:15 and 6:45 is a proportion. In
the given proportion 15 and 6 are called means
while 2 and 45 are the extremes
In a proportion the product of the means is equal
a c
to the product of the extreme. In = or a:b =
b d
c:d, a times d is equal to b times c or ad = bc
Two ratios are proportional if the product of the
means is equal to the product of the extremes.
Example:
1. Joy made 5 pizza in 2 hours, how many pizza
can make in 10 hours?
5 pizza x pizza
=
2 ℎours 10 ℎours
5 x
=
2 10
(2)(x)=(5)(10)
2 x 50
=
2 2
x=25
Therefore, Joy can make 25 pizza in 10 hours. (The student can ask some question regarding to
the topic that the teacher discuss.)
2. Gerlyn is baking cakes for a party. The
recipe calls for 3 cups of flour and 2 cups
of sugar. How much sugar will be needed
if Gerlyn is baking flour cakes and uses 12
cups of flour?
3 cups of flour 12 cups of flour
=
2 cups of sugar x cups of sugar
3 12
=
2 x
(3)(x)=(12)(2)
3 x 24
3 x=24 =
3 3
x=8
d. Abstraction
The teacher will ask some question
regarding to topic that he discuss. (The students will answer the question of the
teacher.)
e. Application
Assignment
Solve the following question:
1. A recipe for oatmeal cookies calls
for 2 cups of flour for every 5 cups of
oatmeal. How much flour is needed
for a big batch of cookies that uses
10 cups of oatmeal.
2. If it takes 10 cups of flour make 50
pizza. How many pizza can be made (The student will copy the assignment)
with 10 cups?
3. Fredmark bought a box of 5
donuts for 200 pesos. How many of
donuts can he buy for 600 pesos?
4. Bernadeth can make 6 cakes ang 4
hours. How many cakes can she
make in 24 hours?
5. Camille can make 8 pizza in 2
hours. How many pizza can she make
in 8 hours?
