Environment Hazards and Environmental Disaster

Environmental hazards which includes air and water pollution, severe weather, or

exposure to chemicals, which have a variety of impacts on human health, ranging from

causing acute illnesses like heat exhaustion to causing chronic diseases like cancer. There

are four categories of hazards which are physical, biological, chemical, and cultural.

Physical hazards encompass environmental activities that take place naturally and may

have a negative impact on human health. Examples are electricity, heat, and etc. Chemical

hazards are described as a non-biological material that could be harmful to a person's

health or else have a bad effect on their lives. Examples are toxins. Biological hazards can

be described as a negative or dangerous effect brought on by interactions between

biological microorganisms and the environment. Bacterial infections, viruses, infections, or

other types of pathogens can all be considered biological hazards. Cultural hazards are

frequently referred to as "lifestyle hazards," and they describe negative effects that result

from a person's regular activities.

Environmental disaster is a catastrophic occurrence that occurs in the natural

environment due to human activities. This distinction is made between ecological

catastrophes and other disturbances like natural catastrophes and deliberate acts of war

like nuclear strikes.

Biochemical Warfare, Terrorism, and Bioterrorism

Biochemical Warfare is the intended use of pathogenic organisms including bacteria,

viruses, and fungi, as well as their toxins, to harm or immobilise people, animals, or plant as

a kind of warfare. This feature of biological warfare makes them prime candidates as

weapons of mass devastation and terrorism. As a result, bioweapons involve living

organisms as well as the toxins they create. Toxins are bioactive compounds that don't

grow or reproduce, but once produced, they can act independently of the organism. In the

instance of a toxin bioweapon, the poison produced is being weaponized.

Terrorism is the improper use of violence or force against people or property with

the intention of intimidating or pressuring a government, the general public, or any section,

in order to promote political or social goals. Threats of terrorism include murders,

abductions, hijackings, bomb threats and explosions, cyberattacks, and the use of chemical,

nuclear, biological, and radiological weapons.

Bioterrorism or also known as biological attack is the deliberate release of bacteria,

viruses, or other pathogens that can infect or kill humans, animals, or crops. An intentional

release of pathogens or other biological agents that can make you ill is referred to as a

biological attack. There are three basic kinds of biological organisms that might potentially

be utilized as weapons: bacterial, viruses and poisons. This weapons has multiple ways;

infecting animals that transmit the disease to humans, contaminating food and water,

and through spraying them into the air.

Consequences

Physical/Physiological

- Burns Nursing Intervention

 Provide warm environment: use

heat shield, space blanket, heat

lights, or blankets.

 Assess core body temperature

frequently.

 Work quickly when wounds must

be exposed to minimize heat loss

from the wound.

- Fractures Nursing Interventions:

 Support fracture site with pillows or

folded blankets. Maintain a neutral

position of the affected part with

sandbags, splints, trochanter roll,

footboard.

 Prevents unnecessary movement

and disruption of alignment. Proper

placement of pillows also can

prevent pressure deformities in the

drying cast.

 Observe and evaluate splinted

extremity for resolution of edema.

 Secure a bed board under the

mattress or place the patient on the

orthopedic bed. A soft or sagging

mattress may deform a wet (green)

plaster cast, crack a dry cast, or

interfere with traction pull.

Psychological

- Anxiety Nursing Interventions:

 Reinforce patient’s personal

reaction to or expression of pain,

discomfort, or threats to well-being

(e.g., talking, crying, walking, other

physical or nonverbal expressions).

 Allow patient to talk about anxious

feelings and examine anxiety-

provoking situations if they are

identifiable.

- Depression Nursing Interventions:

 Express hope to the patient with

realistic comments about the

patient’s strengths and resources.

 Prevent suicide by helping him feel

that life is worth living. Please make

yourself available for him to confide

in and listen for cues of suicidal

tendencies. Explain to him that a

person with suicidal thoughts is not

bad; instead, it is just part of the

illness. Expressing his thoughts is

helpful, and that you could do

something about it.

Incident Command System

It is also called ICS; it is an on-scene, standardized, all-risk incident management

system or concept. Without being constrained by jurisdictional restrictions, ICS enables

users to build an integrated management structure to match the complexity and

requirements of single or numerous incidents.

ICS is quite adaptable on the inside. It can expand or contract to accommodate

various purposes. Due to its effectiveness, it is a very economical and effective management

strategy for small and large businesses.

An accident is an event that necessitates a response. It may be caused by humans or

a natural phenomenon by emergency response professionals in order to avoid or reduce

loss of life, property damage, and/or organic resources. Example of this is fire, hazardous,

oil spill, search and rescue, and etc.
