CHAPTER ONE

1. Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Promotion is an essential aspect of employee motivation and job satisfaction in the workplace. A
promotion refers to a change in job title, salary, and responsibility that is often given to an
employee as a reward for their hard work, experience, and achievements. This change can have a
significant impact on an employee's job satisfaction and can influence their overall work
performance and commitment to the organization.
The background of the study on promotion effects job satisfaction of employees involves
examining the various factors that contribute to the effectiveness of promotions in enhancing
employee job satisfaction. The study may consider the impact of factors such as the frequency of
promotions, the clarity of promotion criteria, the communication of promotion decisions, and the
fairness of promotion procedures. (Tasman & Nasution, 2021)
Additionally, the study may explore the impact of promotions on various dimensions of job
satisfaction, including job security, job recognition, job autonomy, job challenge, and job
performance. It may also investigate the role of individual differences, such as personality traits,
in moderating the effects of promotions on job satisfaction.
Overall, the study aims to provide insights into the relationship between promotions and job
satisfaction and inform strategies for promoting employee job satisfaction through effective
promotion policies and practices.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The statement of the problem regarding the effects of promotion on job satisfaction of employees
can be stated as follows:
Despite the widely accepted notion that promotion is a key motivator for employees and
contributes significantly to their job satisfaction, there is a lack of comprehensive research that
explores the relationship between promotion and job satisfaction. Many employees perceive
promotion as a measure of recognition and appreciation for their hard work and commitment to
their organization. However, the impact of promotion on job satisfaction is not uniform and may
vary depending on several factors, such as the level of job autonomy, the nature of the
promotion, and the cultural values of the organization.
Furthermore, the limited research on the effects of promotion on job satisfaction has produced
conflicting results. Some studies suggest that promotion has a positive impact on job satisfaction,
while others indicate that it may lead to negative effects such as increased job stress, role
conflict, and reduced job autonomy. (Noor & Naseem, 2015)
Therefore, it is essential to investigate the effects of promotion on job satisfaction of employees
comprehensively. This study aims to explore the relationship between promotion and job
satisfaction, identify the factors that moderate this relationship, and provide practical
recommendations for organizations to enhance their promotion policies and practices to improve
employee job satisfaction.

1.3 Purpose of Study

The purpose of a study on the promotion effects on job satisfaction of employees is to investigate
the impact of promotions on employee job satisfaction and to identify the factors that contribute
to the effectiveness of promotions in enhancing job satisfaction. The study aims to provide
insights into the relationship between promotions and job satisfaction and to inform strategies for
promoting employee job satisfaction through effective promotion policies and practices.

1.7 Significance of Study

The study on promotion’s effects on job satisfaction of employees is important as it can provide
insights into the factors that impact employee motivation, engagement, and organizational
commitment. Promotions are a key form of reward in the workplace, and understanding how
they influence employee job satisfaction can help organizations create effective promotion
policies and practices. By examining the relationship between promotions and job satisfaction,
the study can help organizations identify best practices for promoting employee satisfaction and
retention.
The study can also contribute to the existing literature on employee job satisfaction and provide a
