Outline the education you would give to a client suffering from the following conditions;
I. Cystitis
II. Urethritis
III. Prostatitis
ANSWERS
Educating a patient on a condition will entail areas such as the brief description of the condition,
risk factors, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and the various mode of treatments
(medical or surgical).
I. CYSTITIS
Educate the patient on the common clinical manifestations of the condition (dysuria, pyuria,
nocturia, pelvic pain etc.) and on the need to seek medical help if any symptom is present.
Educate patient on the need to drink plenty of fluids and frequent micturition.
Educate patient on how to perform sitz bath to soothe pain or discomfort.
Educate patient on the treatment regimen, prescribed medications and their intended effects.
Patient should be encouraged to report any adverse effects experienced.
Educate patient to avoid food substances that irritate the urinary tract. Examples include
coffee, tea, spicy foods, alcohol, caffeinated beverages etc.
Educate patient to void after sexual intercourse to wash away bacteria.
Educate patient to maintain a proper personal hygiene.
II. URETHRITIS
Educate patient on the need to adhere to the treatment regimen as well as take all prescribed
medications. However, encourage patient to report any adverse effect.
Educate female patients to wipe from front to back and minimize douching.
Encourage patient to stay hydrated and urinate frequently.
Educate patient on the possible symptoms they may experience. Examples are Hematuria,
pain during intercourse, burning sensation during micturition, purulent discharges, frequency
in urine etc.
Educate patient to avoid indiscriminate and unprotected sex to prevent transmission of
bacteria.
Encourage patient to drink fruit juices, preferably cranberry juice to acidify urine and help
destroy bacteria
Minimize stress and physical activity such as cycling, jumping to prevent irritation.
III. PROSTATITIS
Educate patient on the need to avoid substances that have diuretic effects. These include
caffeinated beverages, alcohol, chocolate and spicy foods.
Unless contraindicated, educate patient to consume more fluids as this will help to flush out
bacteria and minimize constipation.
Encourage warm baths to relieve pain in the perineal area and lower back.
Educate patient to consume high protein diets and vegetables rich in fibre to help maintain a
healthy prostate and soften stool to avoid straining at stools.
To minimize discomfort, patient is advised to avoid sitting for a prolonged time period.
Educate patient to void after sexual intercourse to wash away bacteria.
Educate patient on the various treatments of the condition and the need to co–operate.
Educate patient on the clinical manifestations associated with this condition. Some common
manifestations are flank pain, painful sensation when urinating, dysuria, tender prostate gland
etc.
