A showdog isn’t automatically a breeding dog !

Is a showdog in general a option for a working breed ?

The Dobermann is appreciate still by many not about it’s qualities in the showring but about it’s
functionality and as companion in everyday LIFE

Both above lines are my own words and through many shared blogpost I have given some of my
thoughts about it. Still I’m open minded to read and share articles in relation to breeding and breeding
matters.

This blogpost it’s about of what for me is interesting in relation to breeding purebreds breeds. It’s worth
the read and recognizable also within the Dobermann (working dog) and it’s breeding community. That
is also the reason why I like to copy and share it in a new own blogpost. It’s not my article and so I share
of course the source and reference with it.

First I think it’s fair to share something about the author.

Richard G. (Rick) Beauchamp passed away in 2014. He is been described as a dog man through and
through. He was a Publisher of Kennel Review before he began a judge. He has been succesfully involved
in pratically every facet of purebred dogs: breeding, exhibiting,handling, publishing, writing and judging (
also the Dobermann ). To learn more about this man I refer to this shared article and my source Meet

SHOW DOGS & STUD DOGS

“A dog can be a truly great show dog and a poor sire. A dog can hate the show ring and never win a
point and be an outstanding sire. It is just as simple as that.”

The biggest mistake breeders, novice or veteran, can make is to confuse their show dogs with their
breeding dogs. They can be the same. We hope they will be the same. Often they are not.

There are those who say show wins are the indicator of a dog’s value to the breed. In other words, if
many judges agree a particular dog is the current ideal in its breed, the dog should be bred to. I agree —
but only to a degree.

You can get every judge in the country to agree that the dog of the hour is the dog of the hour, but that
same dog can be a complete disappointment in the breeding department.

If a dog’s quality is not realized in the whelping box, all we have is a box full of ribbons and nothing
more.

This is not to say a winning dog cannot also be an outstanding producer. Records prove otherwise. But I
cannot stress strongly enough that it is the producing ability that must be looked to and not the show
record!

Even the outstanding sire can be misused. Most breeds have had those truly wonderful show dogs who
develop records that become the envy of one and all. Unfortunately, they become the envy of too many
who feel if a dog is good enough to win every award in sight, it must be good enough to breed every
female in sight.

In a way, the popular stud dog that produces well only with certain female lines can be very destructive
to a breed. A few excellent youngsters emerge from the right combination and the parade begins. Every
female that can see lightning and hear thunder is bred to the dog, but the percentage of quality
produced is minuscule. The breed takes a big step backward.

Truly great sires are really few and far between. There’s an old saying I heard somewhere along the way
that goes something like, “You can breed that one to a fence post and you’ll still get good pups.”

This no doubt all sounds perfectly logical, but I could write whole books on the excuses young breeders
make for not breeding to the correct dog for their bitch: snow storms, rain storms, typhoons and
earthquakes; the correct dog’s third cousin lives down the street; it’s just her first season and I’m
“proving” her; etc., etc., etc.

There is only one breeding worth making – the right one. When it comes time to breed your quality
bitch, stop and think, what if this turns out to be the only litter she will ever have!”

If you know you know but what is it you know exactly............. My birth name is Daniëlle and born in the
Netherlands. Everyday gives me the opportunity to learn and do better but not everyday I'm capable of
doing it. Life has shown me what it is to be a human with a soul and how to deal with sometimes the
insane world around me. To many times I'll truly don't understand my fellow humans and the way they
can react. If it comes to friends, family or even in the past in regard to my two former human partners, it

¡Un perro de exhibición no es automáticamente un perro reproductor!

¿Es un perro de exhibición en general una opción para una raza de trabajo?

El Dobermann todavía es apreciado por muchos no por sus cualidades en la exposición sino por su
funcionalidad y como compañero en la VIDA cotidiana.

Las dos líneas anteriores son mis propias palabras y, a través de muchas publicaciones de blog
compartidas, he dado algunos de mis pensamientos al respecto. Aún así tengo la mente abierta a leer y
compartir artículos en relación con la cría y cuestiones de reproducción.

Esta entrada de blog trata sobre lo que para mí es interesante en relación con la cría de razas
purasangre. Vale la pena leerlo y es reconocible también dentro del Dobermann (perro de trabajo) y su
comunidad de cría. Esa es también la razón por la que me gusta copiarlo y compartirlo en una nueva
entrada de blog. No es mi artículo y, por supuesto, comparto la fuente y la referencia con él.

Primero creo que es justo compartir algo sobre el autor.

Richard G. (Rick) Beauchamp falleció en 2014. Se le ha descrito como un criador de principio a fin. Fue
editor de Kennel Review antes de convertirse en juez. Estuvo involucrado con éxito en prácticamente
todas las facetas de los perros de raza pura: cría, exhibición, manejo, publicación, redacción y evaluación

"PERROS DE EXPOSICIÓN Y SEMENTALES"

“Un perro puede ser un gran perro de exposición y un pobre como padre. Un perro puede odiar el ring y
nunca ganar un punto y ser un padre excepcional. Es tan simple como eso."

El mayor error que pueden cometer los criadores, principiantes o veteranos, es confundir a sus perros
de exposición con sus perros reproductores. Pueden ser iguales. Esperamos que sean iguales. Muchas
veces no lo son.

Hay quienes dicen que las victorias en exposiciones son el indicador del valor de un perro para la raza.
En otras palabras, si muchos jueces coinciden en que un perro en particular es el ideal actual en su raza,
se debe cruzar al perro. Estoy de acuerdo, pero sólo hasta cierto punto.

Puede lograr que todos los jueces del país estén de acuerdo en que el perro del momento es el perro del
momento, pero ese mismo perro puede ser una completa decepción para el departamento de cría.
Si la calidad de un perro no se logra en la caja de parto, lo único que tenemos es una caja llena de cintas
y nada más.

Esto no quiere decir que un perro ganador no pueda ser también un productor destacado. Los registros
demuestran lo contrario. ¡Pero no puedo enfatizar lo suficiente que lo que se debe considerar es la
capacidad de producción y no el historial de Exposiciones!

Incluso el padre sobresaliente puede ser mal utilizado. La mayoría de las razas han tenido esos perros de
exposición verdaderamente maravillosos que desarrollan registros que se convierten en la envidia de
todos. Desafortunadamente, se convierten en la envidia de muchos que sienten que si un perro es lo
suficientemente bueno para ganar todos los premios a la vista, debe ser lo suficientemente bueno para
cruzar con todas las hembras a la vista.

En cierto modo, el popular semental que se reproduce bien sólo con ciertas hembras de ciertas líneas
puede ser muy destructivo para una raza. De la combinación adecuada surgen unos cuantos jóvenes
excelentes y comienza el desfile. Cada hembra que puede ver relámpagos y oír truenos es cruzada con el
perro, pero el porcentaje de calidad producida es minúsculo. La raza da un gran paso atrás.

Los padres verdaderamente buenos son realmente pocos y espaciados. Hay un viejo dicho que escuché
en algún lugar del camino que dice algo como: "Puedes cruzarlo en un poste de la cerca y aún tendrás
buenos cachorros".

Sin duda, todo esto suena perfectamente lógico, pero podría escribir libros enteros sobre las excusas
que dan los jóvenes criadores para no cruzar al perro correcto para su perra: tormentas de nieve,
tormentas de lluvia, tifones y terremotos; el primo tercero del perro correcto vive calle abajo; es sólo su
primera temporada y la estoy “probando”; etc., etc., etc.

Sólo hay un mejoramiento que vale la pena realizar: el correcto. Cuando llegue el momento de criar a tu
perra de calidad, detente y piensa: ¿y si esta resulta ser la única camada que tendrá ?
