Trends Shaping HRM

Workforce Demographics and Diversity Trends
• The composition of the workforce will continue to change over the next few years
and will continue to become more diverse with more women, minority group
members, and older workers in the workforce.
• Many employers call the aging workforce a big problem. The problem is that
there aren’t enough younger workers to replace the projected number of retiring
baby boomers (i.e., born between 1946-1964).
• How employers deal with the overall projected workforce shortfalls?

Trends on How People Work
On demand workers:
• Today employees aren’t employees at all, but are freelancers and independent
contractors who work when they can on what they want to work on, when the
company needs them.
• Ex. Uber was signing up almost 40,000 new independent contractor drivers per
month, a rate that was doubling every few months.
• What are the implications of Uber-like extended workforces for HR?

means the percent of the population that wants to work is declining.

• What are the top concerns of senior HR managers?

MAN402 Human Resource Management – Week (3) Amira S Mahmoud, Ph.D. 7

Economic Trends
The unbalanced labor force:
• The unbalanced labor force means in some occupations (e.g., high-tech)
unemployment rates are low and in others unemployment rates are very high.
• Recruiters in many companies cannot find candidates and in others there is a
wealth of candidates and many people working today are in jobs much below
their expertise.

management today
• Ex. LinkedIn will soon produce as many as 80% of new recruits often letting line
managers bypass the human resource management unit.
• How technological change affects the nature of jobs?

MAN402 Human Resource Management – Week (3) Amira S Mahmoud, Ph.D. 9

Disturbed and New HRM

• Personnel management is not new.
• Many human resource management tasks are now being redistributed from a
central HR department to the company’s employees and line managers due to
digital technologies such as mobile phones and social media.
• Ex. Hiring managers in some companies bypass human resource management to
find candidates directly using LinkedIn.
