Summary ALTの先生との初めての出会い。先生は、どのような人だろう。何が好きなのだろう。何ができるのだ
ろう。どこの国出身なのだろう。…生徒たちは、これまで学んできた英語を駆使してALTへの質問を行
うことにより、中学校におけるコミュニケーション活動の第一歩を踏み出す。
The first meeting with ALT. What does he/she like? What can he/she do? Where is
he/she from? Students use all of their knowledge and ask him/her questions. Through
this activity, students start their first step of English lessons at junior high school.
• To develop students’ use of English they have learned at elementary school.
Purpose
• To develop students’ skill of asking questions they have learned at elementary school.
Target 小学校の復習 Review from the elementary school textbooks
grammar Are / Do / Can you ~? What ~ do you …？ When is your birthday?
 ALT’s self introduction following Meg’s speech. (textbook p13)

 Blank piece of paper per group to be used in Step 4

How to conduct

5min 1. Introduction of the activity and ALT’s self introduction.

(JTE) In Unit1, Meg made a speech and her friends asked her many questions. Today we
have ALT in our class. Welcome!(Applause) He/She is your English teacher too. I want
you to get to know him/her. First, he/she is going to talk about himself/herself. So,
please listen to him/her.
(ALT) Hello, everyone. I’m ○○. Call me ~. I’m from ~. I like ~. I love ~. I often ~.
Thank you.
7min 2. Question making time.
(JTE) I want you to know more about him/her. Please ask him/her many questions.
Before asking, please discuss and make questions in groups for 5 minutes. Use
expressions like, “Are / Do / Can you ~? What ~ do you …？”
・Make groups of 3-4 people. (8-9 groups)
・Each group makes questions. ALT and JTE visit groups to help students’ English
expressions. ALT may want to answer to those questions, but he/she needs to wait till
step3 while helping.
7min 3. Q&A time.
(JTE) Q&A time has come. You have 8 minutes to ask questions. When you ask a
question, your group gets 1 point. You must always ask new questions. So please listen
carefully to other group’s questions.
(ALT) Now, I will answer your questions. Please ask me.
・Students raise their hands to answer.
・ALT answers their questions.
・JTE writes the points on the blackboard and keeps time.
5min 4. Wrapping Up.
・JTE and ALT sum up the points and decide the top score group.
・ALT gives feedback to the students’ activity and gives educational comments on their
positive attitude toward using English as beginners.
・JTE gives each group a paper to write down the expressions they wanted to use but they
couldn’t in Japanese. In the next lesson, as the review of the activity, JTE shows students
24 those expressions in simple English.
