TEST 1 (4 October 2022)

201901235 ADU-KWAKYE BENJAMIN

Question 1
Adu-kwakye grows and sells cabbages which he cultivates using two
different methods. He has determined that cost relationship of two
cultivation methods is

f (x, y) = 3x2 + xy + 2y 2

Suppose that a customer has ordered 48 cabbages from him. He must grow
x cabbages using one method and y cabbages with the other. How many
cabbages should he grow using each method to meet an order request and
minimize cost?
Question 2
Use the graphical method to solve the following linear programming problem,
Maximize 5x + 10y
Subject to x + 5y <= 10
Subject to x + y <= 6
x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0
Question 3
A person wants to decide the constituents of a diet which will fulfill his daily
requirements of proteins, fats and carbohydrates at the minimum cost. The
choice is to be made from four different types of foods. The yields per unit of
these foods are given in table below.

Food Type Protein Fats Carbohydrates Cost

1 9 3 9 5

2 5 5 1 2

3 3 8 5 2

4 6 6 4 9

Minimum 250 185 200

Requirement

Formulate the problem as a linear programming problem (DO NOT SOLVE).

Question 4
An economy is based on three sectors, coal, oil, and transportation.
Production of a dollar’s worth of coal requires an input of E 0.13 from the
coal sector, E 0.76 from the oil sector and E 0.23 from the transportation
sector. Production of a dollar’s worth of oil requires an input of E 0.12 from
the coal sector, E 0.32 from the oil sector and E 0.11 from the transportation
sector. Production of a dollar’s worth of transportation requires an input E
0.58 from the coal sector, E 0.17 from the oil sector and E 0.2 from the
transportation sector. Find the output from each sector that is needed to
satisfy a final demand of E37 million for coal, E37 million for oil, and E45
million for transportation.
