Suggested answers:

1 a Cities are popular places for people to live so it’s important to have safe and
sustainable cities.
b There are five paragraphs:
1 Introduction: Cities are great places to live. The number of people living in cities is
increasing and they need to be safe and sustainable – links to the title.
2 It is important that people feel safe and included, and that city living is sustainable
as more and more people are now living in cities.
3 There are challenges, and one of the biggest is inequality: 1 billion people live in
slums and there is a rich/poor divide in many cities.
4 A further challenge is global carbon emissions causing pollution.
5 Conclusion: sums up ideas. Something needs doing to make sure there is affordable
housing, cities are safe and people can have a decent, healthy standard of living.

pollution as a further challenge.
d Yes, the conclusion does sum up the content of the text; however, it also brings up new

website address. The author, date, title of the article and date the website was accessed

g Answers will vary. Spellings are correct.
h Generally, the text is well-structured, but point out the problem with the conclusion
and remind learners that all claims need reasoning to justify them and evidence to
support them. The sub-headings for the introduction and conclusion help with the
structure.
