"Indigenous Knowledge System" can be broadly defined as the knowledge and practices that an
indigenous (local) community develop over generations of living in a particular environment.
This includes all forms of knowledge, know-how, skills, practices and beliefs that enable a
community to achieve stable livelihoods in their environment. some examples of indigenous
knowledge that are taught and practiced by the indigenous people are: • Predicting Weather
Conditions and Seasons using knowledge in "Observing Animals" • Using "Herbal Medicine" •
Preserving Foods • Classifying Plants and Animals into Families and Groups based on Cultural
Properties • Preserving and Selecting good seeds for planting • Classifying Different Types of
Soil for Planting based on cultural properties • Producing Wines and Juices from tropical fruits •
Keeping the custom of growing plants and vegetables in the yard
