Q.2 Based on your understanding of the passage answer the following 10x1 =
questions. 10

1 Pollution is not a new problem. In the Middle Ages, most towns were
dirty, water supplies were foul, and diseases spread quickly. But now it has
become more serious than ever before. Now it is not the result of any
ignorance or illiteracy, it is the result of man's greed, selfishness and
carelessness.

2 The pollution of land is due to the increasing quantities of industrial and

house hold waste. Getting rid of plastics is particularly difficult. After some
time, wood and paper decay through the action of bacteria. But plastics
never decay. The more we throw away, the more litter is produced.
3 Vegetable scraps and paper are biodegradable, but glass and plastics
continue to accumulate and pollute the environment. Plastic is often taken
for food by birds, animals and fish, leading to their death. It also chokes our
sewer pipes, and then the dirty smelly water starts flowing out of manholes.

4 The world's oceans have been used as 'dustbins'. Millions of tons of

rubbish are being dumped into the seas every year, harming marine life. All
the oxygen is used up, and the fish die. The bacteria which normally break
down the sewage into harmless substances also die. Only harmful bacteria,
which do not need air, remain and these become the cause of disease.

5 Smoke from factory chimneys and exhaust gases from motor vehicles
pollute the air. About 32 percent of the air environment is filled with smoke.
And about 37 percent of air is polluted by the poisonous gases exhausted by
various means of transportation. 27 percent of air pollution is due to the
waste produced by factories and 40 percent of pollution is due to the house
hold waste. Chemicals in the air combine with moisture to make acids.
These acids eat away stone and bricks, and thus damage buildings. The
gases given out by the engines of motor vehicles can damage people's
health.

6 Another very serious form of pollution is the build-up of carbon dioxide in

a layer high above the Earth. As we burn coal, wood, petrol and oil, more
carbon dioxide is released into that layer. This is causing the sun's warmth
to be trapped near the Earth's surface. It produces the 'greenhouse effect.
Weather patterns would change, and the crops would suffer. Also, the polar
caps would start melting and raise the sea level by about 5 meters. This
would flood many seaport cities, and vast areas of low-lying land would
disappear under the sea.

7 Ridding our world of pollution is an unimaginably big task. Anti-pollution

measures are often unpopular and unprofitable, so many governments and
big companies are slow to act. However, pollution must be controlled,
otherwise one day our Earth will become so polluted that no life would be
possible on it.
Based on your understanding of the passage, answer the following
choosing the correct option.
1. According to you, why is it difficult to get rid of plastic?

2. Justify the statement that plastic is dangerous for animals and fish?

3. Give your opinion, how does plastic harm sewerage?

4. How does the rubbish dumped in oceans harm the marine life?

5. From the understanding of the above passage mention the agents

responsible for polluting the air?
