ELE3113- POWER SYSTEMS THEORY ASSIGNMENT 2023-

DEADLINE: 2ND December 2023

CABLE INSULATION
1. A 132kV transmission line under construction has been found to intersect with an existing line. As such
a 132kV underground cable has been proposed to be used so as to mitigate the problem. However, it
has been noted that the ground where the cable is to be installed is so rocky. The project manager desires
to know how best to have this cable installed following good installation practice. As an engineer,
advise the project manger on how the cable should be installed. Illustrate with a drawing.
2. Prior to installation on the cable, tests were done among which was the insulation resistance test. Derive
the expression for calculation of the insulation resistance R for a cable of length L.
3. Assuming that the cable has a conductor of 1cm and insulation thickness of 0.4cm. given that after
testing the cable, the insulation resistance is found to be 234Mega-ohms. Determine the resistivity of
the insulation.
4. Dissipation factor is key term in relation insulation. Discuss what this term and derive the expression
for its calculation.

SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE

1) Two types of axes are key in modelling of Synchronous generator. With illustrations, discuss
these two axes.
2) Describe the role of damper winding in the synchronous generator.
3) A 25kVA, 415V, three phase, 4 pole, 60Hz, wye connected synchronous generator has a
synchronous reactances of 1.5Ω/phase and negligible stator resistance. The generator is
connected to an infinite bus (of constant voltage magnitude and constant frequency) at 415V
and 60Hz.
a) Determine the excitation voltage, EA when the machine is delivering rated kVA at 0.8 pf
lagging.
b) The field excitation current If increased by 20% without changing the power input from the
prime mover. Find the stator current IA, power factor, and reactive power Q supplied by the
machine.
c) With the field excitation current If as in part (a), the input power from the prime mover is
increased very slowly. What is the steady state limit? Determine stator current IA, power factor,
and reactive power Q.
