The noise came from a group of people gathered right outside my window. A
local festival was taking place, and I hadn't realized it was scheduled for that
weekend. The group was a mix of musicians and revelers, including some of
my own neighbors. They were playing traditional instruments, and the crowd
was singing along, clapping, and some were even dancing. The atmosphere
was festive, but the timing couldn't have been worse for me.
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

How you reacted to the noise:

Initially, I felt a wave of frustration wash over me as the noise disrupted my
concentration. I tried to close the windows to muffle the sound, but it was to
no avail. Realizing that I couldn't study effectively, I decided to take a short
break. I stepped outside to see what all the fuss was about, hoping a brief
respite might help me regain my focus later on.
And explain how you felt about the noise:
Despite my initial annoyance, my feelings shifted as soon as I joined the
crowd. The noise that I had found so disruptive transformed into a lively
expression of our local culture when I allowed myself to be part of it. Watching
the joy on the faces of my neighbors, feeling the rhythm of the music, and
even recognizing a few friends among the musicians, I couldn't help but be
swept up in the celebration.
As an extroverted person, I thrive on social interaction, so it didn't take long
for my irritation to turn into enjoyment. This experience reminded me that
sometimes, it's okay to take a break and appreciate the spontaneous moments
of community and festivity. Even though it was a distraction from my studies,
it was a heartwarming display of my town's spirit, and it made me appreciate
where I come from even more. After the festival, I felt refreshed and was able
to return to my studies with a renewed sense of calm and focus.

IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

teacher had organized this trip to give us hands-on experience with the
diverse flora and fauna, and to instill a love for the natural world in us.
What it was like:
The map that I used was a detailed paper map of the national park given to us
by the park authorities. It featured various trails marked in different colors,
symbols indicating the locations of certain rare plant species, and icons for
facilities like rest stops and information centers. It also had a legend that
explained all the symbols and colors used on the map, making it very tourist-
friendly.
How useful it was:
The map proved to be extremely useful. It helped us navigate the extensive
network of trails and understand the layout of the park. We could identify the
main attractions and plan our route accordingly to ensure we covered the
most significant areas during our visit. It also showed us where we could
expect to find certain animals and plants, which was invaluable for our
biological studies.
Why you used it:
I used the map because while I am quite familiar with the surroundings of my
hometown, I was in an entirely new environment at Pu Mat National Park. The
park is vast, and there was a risk of getting lost or missing out on important
educational spots without a guide. The map was a crucial tool to help us make
the most of our educational trip.
And explain how you felt about the experience:
Using the map was an empowering experience. It gave me a sense of
adventure, as if I was an explorer charting unknown territory. There was
something satisfying about being able to navigate through the park using just
a piece of paper with lines and symbols. It also made me appreciate the skill of
map reading, which I realized is quite important, especially in a world where
electronic devices have taken over. I felt a mix of independence and
responsibility, knowing that my classmates and I could rely on our map-
reading skills to guide us through our journey. Overall, it was a gratifying
experience that added an extra layer of excitement to our field trip and taught
me the value of traditional navigation in our digital age.

IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

Describe a uniform you wear (e.g. at school, at work)

You should say:
Where you wear the uniform
How long you need to wear it
What it looks like
Who bought it for you
And explain how you feel about it

Where you wear the uniform:

I wear my school uniform, obviously, at school. It's what we all have to put on
every day for classes and any school-related activities.
How long you need to wear it:
The uniform is my weekday staple from morning till I get back home in the
afternoon. So, we're talking about maybe eight hours a day, give or take,
depending on after-school activities.
What it looks like:
The uniform's pretty traditional – a navy blue blazer with our school emblem
on it, a crisp white shirt underneath, and straight-cut navy trousers. We have
this maroon tie with thin gold stripes that's part of the deal too. And of course,
there are the black leather shoes, polished to a shine – or at least, they're
supposed to be!
Who bought it for you:
My parents bought the uniform for me. That's the drill for most students at my
school. You go to the uniform shop, get measured up, and then parents foot
the bill.
And explain how you feel about it:
Alright, so how do I feel about it? Well, it's a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand,
it's super easy not having to pick out an outfit every single morning. It saves
time, and honestly, it's a bit of a leveler – no one's getting judged on their
fashion sense because we're all wearing the same thing.
But, you know, sometimes it feels a bit restrictive. Like, there's pretty much
zero chance to show any personal style or flair. And comfort-wise, those
blazers aren't the best – especially when the weather turns warm. You end up
feeling like you're stewing in a suit.
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

Overall, though, wearing a uniform is just part of school life. It's something
you get used to, and it does bring a sense of unity and belonging, which is
pretty cool when you think about it. It's not forever, and in a way, it makes
casual clothes all the more enjoyable when you do get to wear them.

Describe a useful skill that you learned as a teenager

You should say:
What the skill is When and how you learned it
Who you learned it from
Why you learned it
And explain how you felt about learning it

What the skill is:

A really useful skill I learned as a teenager was touch typing. It's the ability to
type quickly and efficiently without having to look down at the keyboard.
When and how you learned it:
I picked up touch typing during my early teens, probably around 14 or 15
years old. At that time, computers were becoming a staple in every aspect of
our lives, and typing was a necessary skill for school assignments and projects.
I learned it by practicing on a desktop computer at home, using a free online
program that guided you through the basics of hand placement and finger
movement, all the way to typing full paragraphs.
Who you learned it from:
I didn't learn touch typing from any one person specifically; it was more of a
self-taught skill with the help of online resources. However, my computer
science teacher at school was quite encouraging. He emphasized the
importance of good typing technique and pointed us towards the online tools
that could help.
Why you learned it:
The main reason I learned touch typing was efficiency. I realized early on that
being able to type quickly and accurately would save me a ton of time on my
homework and later on, in pretty much any job I'd have. As school work
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

started to demand more typed reports and essays, I knew I had to get better
at it.
And explain how you felt about learning it:
Learning to touch type was oddly satisfying. At first, it was a bit frustrating,
especially when getting the hang of not looking at the keyboard. But as I got
better, it became sort of a game to see how fast I could go without making
mistakes. I felt a real sense of achievement when I noticed I could type out my
thoughts almost as quickly as I could think them. Plus, it was a skill that my
friends and family noticed and often complimented, which was a nice bonus.
It felt empowering, honestly, because it was a practical skill I knew would help
me no matter what direction life took. Being able to type efficiently opened up
more opportunities for me, like being able to communicate faster online and
handle digital tasks with ease. So, all in all, it was a super rewarding skill to
learn and one that I still appreciate to this day

Describe a job that you would not like to do

You should say:
What it is
How you know about the job
Whether the job is difficult or not
And explain why you would not like to do it

What it is:
A job that I'd prefer to steer clear of would definitely be a high-rise window
cleaner. That's the gig where you're suspended way up high on the side of
skyscrapers, cleaning the windows.
How you know about the job:
I first became aware of this job when I saw a crew at work during a family trip
to a big city. We were walking around downtown, and I just remember looking
up and seeing these people in harnesses, dangling hundreds of feet in the air,
making those windows sparkle. It was fascinating but also pretty terrifying to
watch.
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

Whether the job is difficult or not:

I'd say it's an incredibly difficult job. Not only does it require the physical
ability to handle the cleaning equipment and do a thorough job, but it also
demands a strong mental game. You've got to be able to deal with the
heights and the winds, not to mention the isolation of being in that little
cleaning platform.
And explain why you would not like to do it:
So, why wouldn't I want to do it? Well, I'm not the best with heights, to be
honest. The very idea of being so high up and so exposed just gives me the
willies. Plus, the weather can be super unpredictable. I can't imagine being
buffeted by strong winds or caught in a sudden rainstorm when you're that
high off the ground.
Then there's the safety aspect. I know there are lots of precautions and safety
measures in place, but accidents can happen. The risk factor is way higher than
in most other jobs.
And, if I'm being completely real about it, it seems like a pretty lonely job.
You're literally in your own little world, with just the glass and the frame for
company. I think I'd miss having coworkers around to chat with and share the
day.
In the end, I have a ton of respect for the people who do this kind of work. It's
definitely necessary, and it takes a special kind of person to handle those
heights and risks day in and day out. But yeah, it's not for me. I'm happy to
keep my feet on solid ground and let the pros handle the high-rise stuff.

smartphone is a tool that helps me explore potential pathways. I can look up
information about different careers, universities, and the experiences of others
who have walked the path I'm considering. It's a source of inspiration and
guidance as I navigate the uncertainty of my future plans.
Without it, not only would my academic and social life suffer, but I'd also lose
a valuable resource in helping me to define my future goals and aspirations.
It's an essential part of who I am as a student and a young person standing on
the threshold of the wider world.

everyone's voice was heard. He had this remarkable ability to listen to all
ideas, no matter how outlandish they seemed at first. Nguyen also took care
of the technical aspects, like setting up experiments and troubleshooting any
issues we encountered with our models. He made sure we stayed on schedule
and met our deadlines.
But what truly made him stand out was how he motivated us. Whenever
someone was struggling or felt their task was too challenging, Nguyen was
there to encourage and work alongside them. He never dismissed anyone's
problems and always found time to help others catch up if they were falling
behind.
And explain why you think he/she was a great team player:
Nguyen was a great team player for several reasons. Firstly, his leadership was
never about commanding; it was about collaborating. He led by example,
often being the first to arrive and the last to leave. His dedication inspired us
all to put in our best efforts.
Secondly, he was an excellent communicator. He made sure everyone was
kept in the loop, and that open lines of communication were maintained at all
times. This was crucial in a rural town like ours where access to technology
and resources can be limited; his efforts often bridged those gaps.
Lastly, he was genuinely invested in everyone's success, not just his own or the
team's. He understood that for the team to do well, each member had to feel

Beyond that, she has a knack for creating an environment where people can
relax and be themselves. She encourages connections between guests,
facilitating conversations that include everyone, which is particularly important
in a tight-knit community.
Her warmth and generosity set an example for me, showing me the value of
community and how to care for others. In a world that can sometimes feel
uncertain, especially for a high school student unsure about the future, Aunt

practices. He's also an avid reader and loves sharing the latest facts he's
learned from books, articles, and documentaries. Besides that, Minh is the first
to know every piece of local news or gossip and enjoys discussing the latest
happenings around town.
And explain how you felt about him/her:
To be honest, Minh's talkative nature can be both endearing and
overwhelming. There are times when I'm truly captivated by the things he has
to say, especially when it comes to topics I'm also passionate about, like
science. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he has this ability to make even the
most mundane subjects fascinating.
On the other hand, there are moments when I wish he'd take a breath and let
someone else get a word in edgeways. But I've come to understand that this is
just his way of expressing his enthusiasm for life and his interests.
His incessant talking has taught me patience and the value of listening. It's
also shown me how important it is to have people who are passionate in your
life, as it encourages you to also engage with things you care about deeply.
Despite being unclear about my future pathway, being around Minh sparks
ideas and interests that could shape the direction I choose to take.
In conclusion, Minh's talkative nature is a fundamental part of who he is, and
while it can be a lot to handle at times, it's also one of the reasons why he's
such an interesting and engaging person to be around.

What you are interested in:

IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

I've always been fascinated by the period of scientific enlightenment and

discovery, specifically the Renaissance. This era, with its explosion of
knowledge and innovation, seems like a time that changed the course of
history and laid the groundwork for modern science.
When it happened:
The Renaissance began in Italy in the 14th century and spread across Europe,
lasting until the 17th century. It bridged the gap between the Middle Ages and
the beginning of the modern age, and it was a golden age for art, literature,
and science.
What you know about it:
From what I have learned so far, the Renaissance was a time when people
started to look back at the classical knowledge of the Greeks and Romans and
built upon it to make new discoveries about the world. It was an age of great
thinkers like Leonardo da Vinci, who was not only an artist but also an
inventor, engineer, and scientist. His curiosity and ability to draw connections
between different fields of study embody the spirit of the Renaissance. It was
also during this time that Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a heliocentric model
of the universe, which was revolutionary.
And why you would like to learn more:
I would like to learn more because the Renaissance represents a period where
questioning established beliefs and rigorous inquiry led to substantial
progress. As someone who loves science and is living in a small town with
limited access to the wider world of scientific thought, the Renaissance
inspires me. I'm intrigued by how the discoveries made during that time
continue to influence our modern world.
Understanding more about the Renaissance could also help me grasp how
cultures and societies can value knowledge and the arts, leading to significant
advancements. As I consider my future and the uncertainty that comes with it,
learning about a time where human thought and understanding took such
great strides forward could provide me with perspective on the importance of
education, curiosity, and interdisciplinary thinking. It could also serve as a
reminder that even during periods of great change, there are always
opportunities for growth and innovation.

Describe an exciting activity that you experienced with

someone else
You should say:
What the activity was
Who you were with
When and where it happened
Why you went for it
And explain how you felt about it

What the activity was:

One of the most exciting activities I've experienced was when my cousin and I
spent a day trekking to the peak of Pu Mat National Park. It was an adventure
that combined my love for nature, science, and a bit of thrill-seeking.
Who you were with:
I was with my cousin, Thanh, who is a few years older than me and has always
been more like an older brother. He shares my interest in the outdoors and
has a knack for turning any outing into an adventure.
When and where it happened:
This trek happened during a long weekend last summer. Pu Mat National Park
is not too far from Dung city, where we live. It's known for its rich biodiversity
and stunning landscapes, including dense forests and towering mountains.
Why you went for it:
Thanh suggested this trek because he knew I was feeling a bit anxious about
my future and the pressures of upcoming exams. The idea was to get away
from it all, to immerse ourselves in the natural world, and to have a bit of a
challenge too. For me, it was a chance to see practical applications of the
science subjects I enjoy, like biology and geography, in the real world.
And explain how you felt about it:
The hike itself was strenuous but incredibly rewarding. As we ascended, the
conversation flowed between us about everything from plant species we
recognized to discussions about what lies ahead in life. The physical challenge
of the trek was invigorating, and reaching the peak felt like a significant
accomplishment.
I remember feeling a sense of awe as we looked out over the vast expanse of
forest from the top. It was a moment of clarity and perspective that made all
my worries seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The experience
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

was thrilling not just for the stunning views, but for the sense of connection it
fostered with nature and with my cousin.
In the end, I was left with an exhilarating sense of accomplishment and a
renewed appreciation for the world around me. It was a reminder that life is
full of adventures and that sometimes stepping away from the familiar can
provide the greatest insights into who we are and what we want to be.

IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

When and where it happened:

The unfortunate experience occurred about six months ago at a new
restaurant that had recently opened in the center of Dung city. It had been
getting a lot of attention from locals, and I was curious to try it out, especially
since dining options in our small town were limited.
What happened:
My friend and I decided to have dinner there on a weekend. We were initially
greeted warmly and seated promptly, which was a good start. However, things
quickly took a turn for the worse. It took a very long time for our server to take
our order, and when our food finally arrived, it was not only cold but also not
what we had ordered. Furthermore, the server was nowhere to be found when
we wanted to address the issue. It felt as though once we were seated, we had
been completely forgotten.
How you reacted:
After trying to get the attention of any staff member for a good while, I
eventually stood up and approached the service counter. I explained the
situation calmly and politely, despite feeling quite frustrated. The staff
apologized and offered to replace the meals, but by then, our appetite had
been somewhat spoiled by the experience. We decided to just ask for the
correct dishes to be packed up so we could leave.
And explain how you felt about the experience:
The entire episode left me feeling quite disappointed and a little disrespected.
Going out for a meal is not just about the food; it's about the experience, and
on this occasion, it was far from enjoyable. As someone who is generally
extroverted, I found it uncomfortable to confront the staff, but I knew it was
necessary to address the poor service we received.
It was also an eye-opener for me; I realized how important good service is to
the success of a business, especially in a small town where word of mouth
spreads quickly. This experience made me more sympathetic towards
individuals who work in service industries and how challenging their jobs can
be. However, it also reinforced the importance of speaking up when
expectations are not met. Being clear and direct, yet polite, is something I'll
carry with me into future interactions, both as a customer and in my own
professional life, whatever path that may take.

Overcoming the technical challenges to create a functioning water filtration
system was a significant personal achievement. It was also rewarding to see a
project that could have a direct positive impact on the lives of people in my
community.
Moreover, the project was a testament to my ability to set ambitious goals and
persevere through difficulties to achieve them. It showed me that with
dedication and hard work, I could rise to the challenge and succeed, even as a
student from a small town with limited resources at my disposal. This
experience gave me confidence in my problem-solving abilities and
strengthened my resolve to pursue a future in the sciences, despite my
uncertainties about the exact career path I would take.

snapshot of a time when I felt confident and proud, and it continues to inspire
those feelings whenever I look at it.

Describe a rule that is important in your school or at work

You should say:
What the rule is about
What happens when people break the rule
Why you think it is an important rule
And explain how you feel about the rule

What the rule is about:

An important rule in my high school in Dung city is the prohibition of mobile
phones during class hours. The policy stipulates that all students must turn off
their phones and keep them in their lockers before classes begin. Phones are
not to be seen or heard in the classroom, and this rule applies to all students
without exception.
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

What happens when people break the rule:

If a student is found using a mobile phone during class, the phone is
immediately confiscated by the teacher. The student can retrieve it at the end
of the day from the school office. For the first offense, a warning is issued. If
the rule is broken repeatedly, the consequences become more severe,
including detention, a note to the parents, and in extreme cases, the student
may be barred from bringing the phone to school altogether.
Why you think it is an important rule:
I believe this is an important rule because it helps maintain an environment
conducive to learning. Mobile phones can be a major distraction not only to
the owner but also to fellow students. By eliminating the temptation to check
social media, play games, or text during lessons, students can focus better on
the material being taught. It also encourages more direct interaction and
engagement between students and teachers.
Furthermore, the rule promotes digital wellbeing by encouraging students to
take regular breaks from screen time. This is particularly important in today's
world, where so much of our time is dominated by digital devices.
And explain how you feel about the rule:
Initially, I found the rule somewhat restrictive, as I like to have my phone on
me and enjoy the convenience it offers. However, over time, I've come to
appreciate the positive impact it has on my concentration and learning.
Without my phone, I am more attentive in class and more likely to participate
in discussions.
Furthermore, I've noticed that without the constant presence of mobile
phones, there's a stronger sense of community in the classroom as students
are more likely to engage with each other face-to-face. It has also forced me
to manage my time better, as I have to schedule any phone-related activities
around the school day.
Overall, I have a positive view of this rule because it aligns with my belief that
education should be a priority, and anything that helps us focus on our studies
is beneficial. It's a rule that supports our academic development, and I can see
the value it adds to our school environment.

picnic.
What it is like:
The park is a beautifully landscaped area, with wide open lawns, flower beds
bursting with color, and well-maintained pathways that meander through the
greenery. There's a small pond in the center, where ducks paddle lazily and
people sometimes feed the fish. Tall trees provide ample shade, making it an
ideal place for people to escape the sun's heat.
There are also several benches and gazebos scattered throughout the park,
where one can sit and enjoy the peaceful environment. Children's laughter can
often be heard from the playground area, which is always lively with families
and their young ones. For the more active visitors, there are jogging tracks
and outdoor exercise equipment available.
And explain why you like to visit it:
I enjoy visiting the park because it offers a respite from my routine and the
closed-off environments of school and home. It's a place where I can breathe
fresh air, enjoy the greenery, and observe a variety of people from our
community coming together. The tranquility of the park is soothing, and the
connection to nature helps me to recharge.
It's also a space that fosters community spirit and reminds me of the simple
joys of life — like watching the sunset paint the sky from the vantage point of
a park bench, or listening to the symphony of birds singing in the trees. The
park is a reminder of the beauty that can be found in our everyday
surroundings, and it's a place that has given me countless memories and
moments of contentment.

Describe a time when you had a problem with using the

computer
You should say:
When it happened
Where it happened
What the problem was
And explain how you solved the problem at last

When it happened:
The incident occurred about six months ago, during a particularly busy week
when I had multiple deadlines converging.
Where it happened:
The problem arose in my home office where I had set up my personal
computer, which I rely on heavily for both work and leisure.
What the problem was:
The issue began when my computer started to slow down significantly, and
then it escalated to the point where it would freeze completely after only a
few minutes of use. This was particularly frustrating because it disrupted my
workflow and put my pending assignments at risk. I initially thought it could
be due to running too many applications at once, but even after closing all
unnecessary programs, the problem persisted.
And explain how you solved the problem at last:
To resolve the issue, I started with the basic troubleshooting steps. I rebooted
the computer several times, but the freezing continued. Then, I checked for
any available updates for the operating system and drivers, hoping that this
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

might resolve any compatibility issues. After updating, the problem still wasn't
fixed.
I decided to check the system's health in more detail. I ran a full antivirus scan
to ensure that malware wasn't causing the problem — the scan came back
clean. Following that, I used the built-in system utilities to check the disk for
errors and to defragment the hard drive, tasks that can sometimes improve
performance if neglected for too long.
When none of these actions worked, I suspected it might be a hardware issue.
I opened up the case and checked for any signs of damage or overheating. I
cleaned out dust from the fans and vents, reseated the RAM sticks, and
checked all cables for secure connections.
After cleaning and reassembling, there was a slight improvement, but the
freezes still occurred. It was then that I ran a hardware diagnostic tool, which
indicated that my hard drive had several bad sectors, a likely culprit for the
freezing issues.
With the diagnosis in hand, I backed up all my data and replaced the failing
hard drive with a new solid-state drive (SSD), which not only resolved the
freezing issue but also significantly improved the overall speed and
performance of my computer.
The problem with the computer was a stressful ordeal, but it taught me
valuable lessons about regular maintenance, the importance of having
backups, and the basics of computer hardware troubleshooting. It was a relief
to finally solve the issue, and my computer has been running smoothly ever
since.

Describe an activity that made you feel tired

You should say:
When and where it took place
Why you took part in it
What the activity was
And explain why it made you feel tired

When and where it took place:

The activity took place just last month during the weekend. It happened right
here in Dung city, in a large field near the outskirts of the town. Our
community had organized a tree planting event to help reforest an area that
had been cleared many years ago for agricultural use but was now being
converted back to forest.
Why you took part in it:
I took part in this activity because I have always been passionate about
environmental conservation, and I believe in taking action to combat climate
change. This initiative was also a part of our high school's environmental club's
project, and as an active member and someone who enjoys science, I felt it
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

was my responsibility to contribute. Plus, it was an excellent opportunity to

work together with friends and classmates for a good cause.
What the activity was:
The activity was physically demanding; it involved planting young trees in pre-
dug holes across the field. We had to carry the saplings, tools, and water
buckets to the planting sites. We spent the whole day bent over, digging,
planting, and then watering the young trees. It was a hot day, and the sun was
relentless, which added to the physical strain.
And explain why it made you feel tired:
The combination of the physical labor, the heat, and the duration of the
activity made me feel extremely tired. Digging and planting may seem simple,
but doing it repeatedly for hours is exhausting. Each sapling had to be
carefully placed and secured, which required a lot of attention and diligence.
Moreover, carrying heavy buckets of water to ensure each new tree had
enough to survive was particularly strenuous.
The sun and heat sapped our energy, and despite taking breaks and staying
hydrated, the constant exertion under such conditions was draining. By the
end of the day, my muscles were sore, my back ached from bending over, and
I felt a level of physical fatigue I hadn't experienced before.
Despite the tiredness, the sense of accomplishment from participating in
something that would positively impact the environment made the exhaustion
worth it. It was a practical application of my interest in science and a tangible
way to contribute to a greener future, which was incredibly satisfying. Plus, I
slept really well that night, which is always a sign of a day well spent!

Describe a piece of good advice that you gave to someone

Why you gave the advice
And explain how he/she followed your advice

Who you gave the advice to:

IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

I gave the advice to my younger cousin, Anh, who is currently in middle

school. Anh has always looked up to me, not just because I'm older, but also
because we share similar interests in science and technology.
What the advice was:
The advice I gave to Anh was that he should start exploring his passion for
science beyond his school textbooks by engaging in hands-on experiments
and projects. I suggested that he should join a science club or even start one
at his school if there wasn't already one in place.
Why you gave the advice:
I decided to give Anh this advice because, during one of our family gatherings
in Dung city, I noticed him getting quite animated when talking about his
science classes. However, he felt that the school curriculum was too theoretical
and didn't allow him much space for practical learning. Remembering my own
experiences, I knew that getting involved in an extracurricular science club
could provide a more interactive and engaging way to learn and could
potentially open doors for him in the future.
And explain how he/she followed your advice:
Anh took my advice to heart. He found out that his school didn't have a
science club, so with the help of some teachers, he took the initiative to start
one. He began organizing weekly meetings where he and his classmates could
conduct simple experiments using everyday materials. They started with basic
things like building baking soda and vinegar volcanoes, but soon moved on to
more complex projects like making simple circuits and studying plant growth.
His teachers saw the enthusiasm in the students participating in the club and
provided more support by supplying additional materials and sometimes even
leading the sessions. Anh's confidence grew as he took on the responsibility of
leading the club, and his practical understanding of scientific concepts
deepened.
Seeing Anh follow my advice and witnessing the positive impact it had on him
was incredibly rewarding. Not only did he enrich his own learning, but he also
created an opportunity for his peers to explore their interests in science in a
hands-on, collaborative environment. It was a testament to the power of
taking initiative and the benefits of practical learning experiences, especially in
a subject as dynamic as science.

The wait for the results felt incredibly long; it was actually about three months
from the submission deadline to the announcement of the winners. Given the
scale of the competition, with participants from all over the country, the
lengthy wait was understandable, but it certainly felt like an eternity to me.
Why you waited for a long time:
The wait was extended due to the comprehensive review process. Each project
underwent several rounds of judging by different panels, which included
industry experts and university professors. Additionally, the organization had
to coordinate the competition across multiple regions, which contributed to
the prolonged wait time.
And explain how you felt about the experience:
Throughout the waiting period, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions.
Initially, I was filled with a great sense of accomplishment for having

my hard work and passion for science, which was incredibly fulfilling.
In retrospect, the experience taught me patience and the value of
perseverance. It reinforced my love for science and strengthened my resolve
to pursue a future in this field, despite my initial uncertainty about my path.
The waiting period, filled with hope and uncertainty, was a profound lesson in
itself, teaching me that good things often do come to those who wait and
work hard.

When you first saw this painting:

I first saw this painting during a local art exhibition at our town hall in Dung
city about two years ago. The exhibition featured various artworks by
Vietnamese artists, but there was one particular painting that caught my eye
and left a lasting impression on me.
What the painting is about:
The painting is a vibrant street scene depicting the Old Quarter of Hanoi. It's
one of the many works by the celebrated Vietnamese artist Bui Xuan Phai. His
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

paintings are renowned for showcasing the beauty and energy of Hanoi's
streets, and this one was no different. It featured the narrow, bustling streets
lined with old houses, vendors, and the daily buzz of the city's residents. The
use of bold colors and expressive brush strokes brought the scene to life,
encapsulating the essence of the Old Quarter’s charm.
Who drew/painted it:
Bui Xuan Phai, the artist, is one of Vietnam's most beloved and respected
painters. He was born in 1920 and spent most of his life painting the city he
loved – Hanoi. Phai is particularly famous for his works that portray the streets
and people of Hanoi with warmth, nostalgia, and a deep sense of humanity.
And explain why you like this drawing/painting:
I have a deep appreciation for this painting for several reasons. First and
foremost, the way Bui Xuan Phai captures the spirit of Hanoi is truly
remarkable. Having visited Hanoi once as a child, the painting resurrected my
memories of the city's vibrant atmosphere. The chaotic yet harmonious nature
of the Old Quarter's streets is something that photographs can seldom
convey, but Phai's painting managed to do just that.
Additionally, the painting serves as a cultural bridge that connects me to the
rich history and traditions of Vietnam. As a science student who is often
immersed in the objective and analytical, the painting offers me a glimpse into
the subjective and emotional side of life. It's a reminder of the importance of
art in understanding and appreciating the world from different perspectives.
The colors used in the painting are another aspect that I find particularly
attractive. They are not just visually pleasing but also evoke a sense of
nostalgia, which is a sentiment I deeply resonate with, being from a small town
with its own history and charm.
Finally, I admire Bui Xuan Phai's dedication to his craft. His passion for painting
and his love for Hanoi are evident in each brush stroke. This resonates with me
because it reflects the importance of passion and dedication – values that I
believe are essential for success in any field, including my own future
endeavors, whatever they may be.

And explain why you think it is interesting

Where it is:
Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, is a place of immense charm and historical
interest. It is located in the northern part of the country, resting on the banks
of the Red River. As one of the most ancient capitals in the world, it's a city
where travelers can find well-preserved colonial buildings, ancient pagodas,

How you knew it:
I became acquainted with Hanoi through various documentaries, travel blogs,
and literature that celebrate its rich culture and history. The city's reputation as
a vibrant and historical hub always seemed to surface in discussions about
Vietnam's must-visit destinations. When I finally visited, the city's mix of
history, culture, and a fast-paced lifestyle was indeed captivating.
IELTS PREP FOR SPEAKING 2024

What special features it has:

Hanoi is a blend of East and West, old and new. The city's heart is the chaotic
Old Quarter, where narrow streets are lined with French colonial architecture,
Buddhist temples, and markets. Each street historically was dedicated to a
specific trade, a tradition that is still evident today as you wander through
areas specializing in silk, silver, and other goods.
One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the Hoan Kiem Lake, located in the
city's center. The lake is a social hub and is ringed by trees and pathways,
making it a peaceful retreat from the busy city streets. The Turtle Tower and
the Temple of the Jade Mountain sit on islands within the lake, adding to the
scenic and historical significance of the area.
Another special feature of Hanoi is its culinary scene, which offers a wide array
of flavors from street food stalls to high-end restaurants. Pho, the famous
Vietnamese noodle soup, is a must-try here. Additionally, the city is home to
numerous coffee shops, reflecting the strong café culture introduced by the
French and embraced by the locals.
The city also plays host to many cultural events and festivals, particularly
during the Lunar New Year (Tet) celebrations, which are an explosion of color
and traditions.
And explain why you think it is interesting:
Hanoi is interesting because it represents the duality of Vietnam's progress; it
is a city that honors its past while eagerly forging its future. It provides an
educational journey through Vietnam's history, from the ancient Thang Long
imperial city to the more recent Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where the country's
revered leader is interred.
Moreover, Hanoi's ability to maintain its authenticity despite the booming
tourism industry is admirable. It's not just a place to see but also to
experience. The city's atmosphere is a canvas of vibrant street life, where the
sounds, smells, and sights combine to create an unforgettable experience. The
resilience and hospitality of the people add to the city's charm.
The contrast of watching traditional puppet shows at the Thang Long Water
Puppet Theatre and then seeing modern Vietnamese youths embracing pop
culture in the streets is a testament to the city's dynamic cultural landscape.
Hanoi's diversity in experiences, from its cuisine to its architecture and cultural
offerings, makes it an endlessly interesting destination for any traveler or
resident.
