OBJECTIVES
WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD BY LOUIS ARMSTRONG

TASK 3
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world

SUMMARY OF THE STORY
'A day in the country' is written by Chekhov. It pays homage
to an unsung hero, a homeless cobbler whose name is
Terenty. In the beginning of the story a beggar girl named
Fyokla, who is 6 years old comes running through a village.
The village is preparing for an approaching storm. She
addresses everyone as “uncle”. She is searching for some
particular person. She finally finds Terenty in the kitchen-
garden. He is a “tall old man with a thin, pock-marked face,
very long legs, and bare feet, dressed in a woman’s tattered
jacket”. He does not look like a hero.
But Fyokla is searching desperately for someone to help
in freeing her brother Danilka, whose hand is stuck in a
tree. Terenty does not give importance to the
approaching storm and talking reassuringly in fatherly
tones he goes to free Fyokla’s brother.

The story tells us that Terenty “answers all questions,

and there is no secret in Nature which baffles him. He
knows everything”. The writer further adds that indeed
“all the villagers, generally speaking, know as much as
he does”. But the difference is that Terenty is willing to
share his knowledge and time with the two orphan
children. The children love him for this reason.
The two children retire to a deserted barn after
spending the day with Terenty. And Terenty goes to the
tavern. Chekhov further tells about Terenty's sincerity
and love for the two orphan children. Terenty comes
back later and puts bread under their heads making
the sign of the cross while they are asleep. In this way
Terenty is tries to make the lives of Fyokla and Danilka
a little better than his own.

TOPICS FOR
SPEECH WRITING
An informative speech is given for the
purpose of providing information about a
topic to the audience. Notice that the
purpose of an informative speech is similar
to the purpose for writing an informative
essay. The organizational structure and type
of information in an informative
speech would be similar to that in an
informative essay.
To write an informative speech, you first choose
a topic-either one that you already know about
or one that you are willing to research and learn
about.

Then, you outline and draft your informative

speech based on the topic, key points, and
details and information you want to give about
your topic. Make sure you catch your
audience's attention and that you summarize
key points and "take-aways" as you go.
Examples:
1. College professor lecturing on a
specific topic during a class.
2. Guest speaker presenting
information to a group of students
about how to apply for college.
3. Company president presenting
information about last quarter's sales
to a group of board members.
PERSUASIVE
SPEECH
A persuasive speech is given for the purpose of
persuading the audience to feel a certain way, to take a
certain action, or to support a specific view or cause.
Notice that the purpose of a persuasive speech is
similar to the purpose for writing an argumentative or
persuasive essay. The organizational structure and type
of information in a persuasive speech would be similar
to that in an persuasive essay.
To write a persuasive speech, you choose a topic
about which people disagree or can have differing
opinions. Your persuasive argument will be made
stronger if you can demonstrate that you are
passionate about the topic and have a strong
opinion one way or the other. Then, you outline
and draft your persuasive speech by taking a
position on the topic and outlining your support
for your position. It is often helpful to also
discuss why the "other side" is incorrect in their
beliefs about the topic. Make sure you catch your
audience's attention and that you summarize key
points and "take-aways" as you go.
Examples:
1. A teenager attempting to convince her
parents that she needs to be able to stay
out until 11pm instead of 10pm.
2. A student council president trying to
convince school administrators to allow
the students to have a dance after the
final football game of the season.
ARGUMENTATIVE
SPEECH
Speech that tries to change the reader’s mind by
convincing him/her to agree with your point of view
about “Nature Vs. Nurture”.This attempts to be
highly persuasive and logical. It usually assumes that
the reader disagrees with writer, but it should be
noted that the reader is no less intelligent than the
writer.Hence, this speech should be written
objectively. logically and respectfully.
TAKE
NOTE
HOW TO SAY IT
Words are powerful.They convey your
message. Word choice needs just as much
attention as speech organization and
purpose. Select clear, appropriate and
descriptive words that best communicate
your ideas. Every word should add value
and meaning to the speech.
YOUR BODY SPEAKS
Body language is an important aspect of
speaking because it enhances your messages
and adds to your credibility. It also helps
release nervousness you may feel. Stance,
movement ,gestures, facial expressions, and
eye contact help communicate your message
and achieve your speech’s purpose.Body
language should be smooth, natural and convey
the same message that your listeners hear.
 VOCAL VARIETY
Your voice has a major effect on your
audience. A lively, enthuasiastic voice
attracts and keeps listeners ‘ attention. Your
speaking should be
pleasant,natural,powerful,expressive and
audible. Use volume,pitch,rate and quality
as well as appropriate pauses to reflect and
add meaning and interest to your message.
Your voice should reflect the thoughts you
are presenting.
