Insert Figures 1-4 as specified by the Lab Manual Below. Be attentive to drawing and figure caption
requirements. Drawing labels may be handwritten, but captions must be typed.
1. Figure 1 (2pt)

Figure 1. The image above depicts the four Hydra specimen observed microscopically. These include the
specimen feeding (1A), digestive system (1B), ovary (1C), and spermaries (1D). The hydra feeding
specimen was viewed under a dissection microscope at the 80x magnification. The Hydra tentacle and
nematocyst can be seen above as well, where the tentacle is used to capture prey and the nematocyst is a
toxin that aids in capture/defense. The Hydra digestive system was observed under 100x magnification.
The coelenteron was visible, which is where digestion occurs. The Hydra ovary was observed under 100x
magnification as well. The ovary is a reproductive organ that functions in producing eggs. One ovary was
visible. The spermaries are another reproductive organ that functions in producing sperm, including the
testes. There were four testes visible under the microscope.
2. Figure 2 (2pt)

Figure 2. The image above depicts the drawing of an earthworm viewed under 80x magnification with a
dissecting microscope. The key characteristics of the specimen are labeled below, which include the
clitellum, prostomium, anus, sperm grooves, and male gonopores. The clitellum looks like a ring of skin
around the body of the worm, which functions in reproduction. The prostomium, or the mouth, is situated
above the clitellum and aids in food consumption. The anus is situated at the bottom of the worm and
secretes waste. Lastly, the sperm groove and male gonopore are structures that assist with sperm flow
during mating with another specimen.

3. Figure 3 (1pt)

Figure 3. The tapeworm image above was created via viewing a slide under 100x magnification. Bodily
structures of the tapeworm are labeled, which include the rostellum hooks, rostellum, strobila, and
proglottids. The rostellum hooks serve the purpose of keeping the tapeworm attached to the host, and
the rostellum also helps with attachment. The strobila and proglottids contain the male and female
reproductive systems of the tapeworm.
4. Figure 4 (1pt)

Figure 4. The ascaris (round worm) image can be seen above, which is a female. A dissection was done to
identify specific parts of the ascaris. Structures included in the drawing are the vagina, uterus, oviducts,
ovaries, and genital pore. These structures are all sexual organs that contribute to reproduction.

Lab Report” documents in the Formal Lab Report Module on Canvas. Use the data you generated in Lab 3 to
create the FLR sections.

5. Write a discussion section for your formal lab report. (3 pts)

Discussion:
The null hypothesis, which claimed that sowbugs would prefer oranges over broccoli, was rejected.
Therefore, it is more probable that the sowbugs prefer broccoli over oranges. This means that there is
more evidence that supports the alternative hypothesis. The food preference chi-square test also supports
this alternative hypothesis. One possible reason as to why the experimental results differ from the
expected results may be because sowbugs are drawn to broccoli because it mimics the plants in their
natural habitat.

Regarding experimental error, there are a variety of errors that may have occurred during the experiment.
One possible mistake could be using sowbugs that are not in optimal health. This may lead to the sowbugs
acting abnormally or not exhibit a behavior they typically would. A solution to this error would be to redo
the experiment with sowbugs taken directly from outside that are in good health, then use them to repeat
the experiment and compare results.

6. Write a conclusion section for your formal lab report. (1 pts)

Conclusion:
After comparing the experimental results with the expected results, it can be concluded that sowbugs
have a preference for broccoli over oranges due to familiarity with plants in their habitat.
