Rainbow Poem, Puzzle,

and Activity Ideas
Ideas for Playing with your Toddler
Print out your poem and hang it somewhere in your home where you will see it often. A fridge or your child’s bedroom door is ideal. Each
time you see the poem, sing it to your toddler. Adding in actions is a wonderful way to engage your little one. For example, try sweeping
your arms big over your head as though you are painting a rainbow as you sing.

When you print off your Rainbow Puzzles, you might consider printing on cardstock to make it more “toddler friendly.” Another option is to
print it on regular paper and then glue it onto cardboard to make it sturdier for play. There are two Rainbow Puzzles you can print. You
might choose to use only one and focus on just 3-4 colours at a time.

Once your Rainbow Puzzle is ready, begin by doing the puzzle

with your toddler, showing them how the pieces all nest
together to form a rainbow. It is no problem if your child can’t
do this activity yet!

There are many fun ways to use this puzzle:

• Hide the pieces in a sensory bin for your toddler to

discover. A simple sensory bin might include some rice or
pompoms. Be sure to lay a big sheet down first to make
clean-up a breeze! You can add in kitchen tongs and
challenge your toddler to use the tongs to remove the
Rainbow Puzzle pieces.

• Lay the pieces on the floor and have your child go on a

scavenger hunt to find an object in your home that is the
same colour as each puzzle piece.

• Hide the rainbow pieces around a room and have your

toddler go on a scavenger hunt to find each piece.

• Lay all of the pieces on a table, call out a colour, and see
if your child can grab it before you can!

• Tape the rainbow pieces to your stairs, calling out each

colour every time you walk up the stairs.

I hope you love this little activity and it adds a smile to your
toddler’s face!

Sample Week of Activities

Playful Days
Toddler Program
Monday: Nests or Caves Sensory Exploration

Materials: Egg cartons, scissors, small toy animals, green construction paper or sensory bin filler of your choice
Use egg cartons to make some tiny nests for birds or caves for bears! Cut up egg cartons into individual cartons and add them to a sensory
bin with tiny animals and some sort of sensory bin filler. Ripped up green construction paper works very nicely for this bin.

Tuesday: Wise Old Owl Fine Motor Skills

Materials: Glue, paper plate, feathers, washcloth, construction paper or googly eyes
Wise owls live in the forest and keep watch over the night with their great big eyes! Make a simple owl craft with your child by adding
glue to a paper plate and having your child cover it in feathers. Keep a warm washcloth nearby to clean glue off fingers to keep this a fun
sensory experience! Once the plate is completely covered with feathers, add two great big eyes. Be sure to chat with your child about how
the feathers and glue feel to build that vocabulary.

Wednesday: Go on a Bear Hunt Gross Motor Skills

Materials: Stuffed teddy bear

You can do this activity indoors or out. Begin by hiding a stuffed teddy bear somewhere, then sing the song, “We are going on a bear hunt,”
encouraging your child to repeat after you. As you hunt for the teddy bear, have your child climb over beds, under chairs, around tables,
and so on. Play this again and again to build those big muscles, develop language, and build memories too!

Thursday: Animal Book Exploration Language Development

Materials: Books about animals

Grab some books about animals and explore. As you are looking through the books, stop every time you get to a new animal. Chat about
that animal and stand up pretending to be the animal. Can you stomp like a heavy elephant? Or flap your wings like a tiny bird? Maybe you
will roar like a fierce lion!

Friday: Animal Hide-and-Seek Scavenger Hunts & Imaginative Play

Materials: Stuffed animals

Play hide-and-seek with some animal friends today. Choose three animals and hide them in a room for your child to find. When your child
is getting close to the animal, start making the noise of the animal. For example, when your child gets close to the bear, you can begin
roaring.
