Exit Button and Door Contact Wiring
DOOR CONTACTS
To monitor forced-entry or door-held-open
alarm conditions, connect normally closed
door contacts to the door contact inputs.

Door contact inputs must be enabled via the following jumpers:

JP 23 JP 52
Reader Port A Reader Port B
To enable door contact set a jumper to the right side of the board (right
two pins)

EXIT BUTTONS
Connect a normally open momentary switch to each exit button input.
Exit buttons must be enabled through the Reader Type DIP Switch (S5) by
turning ON switch 2 (Reader A) and switch 5 (Reader B).

NOTE: Both door contact and exit button inputs have voltage present on
the circuits. Only connect dry contact devices to these inputs. If the switch #2
or #5 is disabled then there is no forced entry alarm monitoring at the panel.

Tamper/Forced, Door-Held-Open and Alarm-
Shunt Outputs

Each reader port on the CP40 is equipped with three relay outputs for:
 Forced Entry
 Door Held Open
 Alarm Shunt

Each relay provides a dry contact, rated for 2 A @ 30 VDC maximum.

LEDs located near each relay indicate the on/off state of those outputs.

TAMPER/FORCED ENTRY OUTPUT (SHARED OUTPUTS)

Forced Entry
If the door is forced open (door contact open) without either a valid access-
granted or exit-button event, a forced-entry alarm occurs and this output will
be activated. A message will be transmitted to host PC if the panel is online.

NOTE: If the switch #2 or #5 (at S5 dip switch block) is disabled then there
is no forced entry alarm monitoring at the panel for particular reader/door.

CP40 Page 25 of 43
Installation Manual October 2015 • Rev. 2.7
Reader Tamper
A reader tamper alarm can be created if PIN 1 (D0 Wiegand) and PIN 8
(Ground) at reader ports are shorted on the board. To monitor a reader
tamper, connect normally open switch at the back of the reader which can
short out those pins, so if someone pulls the reader from the wall, the switch
will close and activate this output.

Cabinet Tamper
Panel-tamper output can also be activated if there is a cabinet-
tamper alarm input present. To enable cabinet tamper move JP7 to
the enabled position (bottom 2 pins). If Cabinet tamper is used,
both tampers on Reader “A” and Reader “B” will go on in case of
alarm. Maestro software will report Panel Tamper.

DOOR HELD OPEN OUTPUT

If a cardholder is granted access by either a card or an exit button usage and
the door is held open longer than the permitted door-held-open time
programmed from the host PC, the door-held-open alarm occurs (reader
beeps to notify users, first is a pre alert beep, followed by a solid beep) then
this output will be activated. The message is also transmitted to the host PC
if the panel is online.

ALARM SHUNT OUTPUT

This output will be activated when a user is granted access by using a card or
exit button. It can be used to bypass external alarm points.

Onboard Input/Output Points

The CP40 board is equipped with:

 2 onboard supervised inputs
 2 onboard output control signals which can be used with external relays

These onboard inputs and outputs can be used if an SIOPT-16 input/output

board is not installed. These points will be mapped as points 1 through 4 in
the Maestro software.

NOTE: in the Maestro software you must configure points 1 and 2 as inputs,
and points 3 and 4 as outputs. Failure to do so will result in undesired
operation.

For I/O wiring, see pages 25 and 26.

To enable the fire-alarm release input:

1. Connect a normally closed dry contact output from a fire alarm panel
to Fire Release connector
2. Move JP62 to the bottom 2 pins – enabled position

NOTE: By default JP62 is sitting at the top 2 pins – disabled position.

FIRE ALARM RESET INPUT

This input is used to restore power to the locks and the readers following a
fire alarm. A momentary closure must be applied to restore power.

To enable fire-alarm reset:

1. Connect a normally closed dry contact output from a fire-alarm
reset switch to Fire Reset connector
2. Move JP63 to the bottom 2 pins - enabled position

NOTE: By default JP63 is sitting at the top 2 pins – disabled position.

INPUT AND OUTPUT POINT WIRING
Each point on the SIOPT-16 input/output board can be individually
configured via jumpers to be:
 an input point
 a normally open output point
 a normally closed output point

All supervised input points must use Cansec end-of-line resistors (CA-
EOLRES). If supervision is not required, it must be disabled by moving
switch 2 on the CP40's Options DIP Switch (S2) to the ON position.

In the diagram above, point 1 is configured as an input and points 2-3

are configured as outputs.

SIOPT-16 BOARD FIRE-ALARM RELEASE
Fire release is used to drop power to the locks and readers in the event of a
fire. Fire release can be controlled through either:
 the CP40 fire release input
 the SIOPT-16 input/output board

To Enable the I/O Fire Alarm Release circuit from CP40

1. Make sure jumper JP56 is in the OFF position.

2. Make sure to short I/O Fire Alarm Release input at SIOPT board (JP5).

3. Use CP40 Fire Alarm Release inputs.

To Enable the I/O Fire Alarm Release circuit separately from CP40
1. Make sure jumper JP56 is in the ON position.

2. Connect wires from N/C fire alarm output (at the fire panel) to the fire
release input on the SIOPT input/output board (JP5).

NOTE: When the fire release input on the SIOPT-16 input/output board is
open (no wire present to short out connector) at JP5, all relays are in the fail-
safe position (OFF). This equals the condition “power off” at CP40. If JP5 is
shorted all relays are powered “ON” as the default state.

CP40 Page 36 of 43
Installation Manual October 2015 • Rev. 2.7
Elevator Interface Board
NOTE: An elevator interface board is required for elevator control of more
than 16 floors.

Elevator control is available for 16, 32, 48, and 64 floor configurations. One
elevator interface board is required for each elevator cab with one reader port
available for use inside the elevator. Dry contacts are provided from the
elevator interface board to interface with the elevator manufacturer's system.
It is suggested that the elevator company supplies a relay interface for the
floor control. Our interface PCB would control the “relay coils” of the
elevator company’s relay PCB.
Note#1: Place diodes at the elevator interface PCB coils.
Note#2: The CP40 requires special firmware for the above configuration.

The second reader port “B” on the CP40 may only be used as a “lobby call-
down reader”. When used by a cardholder with time and access to at least
one floor, this will activate reader “B” lock output. The lock output can then
be used to initiate a call-down to the elevator manufacturer’s system.

CP40 Page 37 of 43
Installation Manual October 2015 • Rev. 2.7
Programming and transaction are not available for reader “B” on an elevator
configuration.

NOTE: The elevator interface board requires special firmware, depending on

floor configurations (16, 32, 48, and 64).

The elevator control system consists of an elevator interface board and

SIOPT-16 input/output boards.

Common setups include: (see previous image)

Floors SIOPT-16 boards
up to 16 1
up to 32 2
up to 48 3

Troubleshooting
COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS
Symptoms: No communication to any panels
1. Under View >Communications, check the communications statistics in
the Maestro software. Check that the POLLS count is incrementing for
each panel programmed. If the panel is not being polled, you must
program the panel into the system. (Note: only on direct COM port
communication)
2. Under Edit >System >Communications, check that the COM port being
used on the PC is assigned to the trunk in the Maestro software. When
you change or assign a COM port, you need to restart the Maestro
Software. Check other applications, since COM port might be occupied.
3. Under Commands >Communications, perform a Restore
Communications command from the Maestro software. A system
initialization message should be received from each panel.
4. If you still unable to restore communications, check the wiring from the
CLAUSB or CanLan to the first panel. Make sure that jumpers and DIP
switches on the CLAUSB are set up properly. Double-check the CanLan
setup through CanLan configuration software to make sure proper
operation mode is selected and IP setup is correct. CanLan “Poll” count
requires firmware version 7 for CanLan advanced diagnostics software.
5. Check the panel addresses. If two panels have the same address, conflicts
will occur and cause communication problems.
Symptoms: No communication to some panels
1. Double-check the RS-485 wiring and jumper settings on the panels.
2. Make sure that each panel has a unique address.
3. Make sure that the panel was programmed properly in the Maestro.
4. Double-check the power input at those panels.
5. If all attempts to restore communication fail, please contact Cansec

READER PROBLEMS
Symptoms: Does not read cards, no audible beep, no LED
1. Make sure that credentials are compatible with the reader. (e.g. HID
reader+HID card).
2. Measure the voltage input at the reader. Make sure the polarity is correct.
If voltage is not present, check the fuses on the CP40 (near reader ports).
3. If the voltage is correct, check the wiring and check that the switches on
the Reader Type DIP Switch (S5) have been correctly set for Wiegand
input or Magstripe (depending on the type of readers used).
4. If the above steps are correct, connect the reader on a short cable at the
CP40. If the reader works properly, then there could be a problem with
the cable.

Symptoms: Reader is in Tamper Alarm

1. If both readers show tamper, most likely the cabinet tamper input is open.
2. If one reader is in tamper, then check the wiring to make sure the D0 wire
is not grounded at GND on the board.

Symptoms: Reader Transmits Illegal System Code Message

1. Ensure that your credentials have correct system code (first five numbers
on the card). Make sure this number is the same as your Maestro software
(Go to Help, then About Maestro, click on Details)
2. Check the D0 and D1 wires, to make sure they are not reversed.
3. Check pins 3 and 6 on the Reader Type DIP Switch (S5) to make sure
you have Forward option selected. EXCEPTION: HID insert readers.
4. Make sure that the panel memory was cleared and panel fully downloaded
(see the New Installation Instruction section).
5. If the problem is intermittent, make sure that the shield of the reader is
connected to pin 8 of the reader port. Also ensure that the data lines (D0
and D1) are not twisted in twisted pair.

INPUT/OUTPUT BOARD PROBLEMS
Symptoms: Input/outputs not responding
1. Check that the CP40 has a SIOPT-16 board defined in the Maestro
software. Go to Edit >Panel Definitions and then select the appropriate
panel and click Edit. An SIOPT-16 board has to be selected on the right
side of the screen.
2. Make sure that the switch 1 on the Options DIP Switch (S2) is set to ON
to enable an SIOPT-16 board. Remember to reset the CP40 panel after
making changes to the Options DIP Switch (S2).
3. Make sure that all points on the SIOPT-16 board is set (see Jumper Settings
section) the same way as in the Maestro software, for instance an input
point on the SIOPT-16 board has to be set as an input in the software.
4. If point has a trouble status, make sure the resistor is properly installed at
the point. If the resistor was not used, disable supervision with switch 2 on
the Options DIP Switch (S2).

OTHER PROBLEMS
Symptoms: System is not reporting door contact opening
1. Check the door contact jumpers to make sure they are enabled.

Symptoms: Exit button doesn’t work

2. Check the switches on the Reader Type DIP Switch (S5) to make sure exit
buttons are enabled.

Symptoms: Intermittent lock-ups

3. Make sure that 1N400x series diodes are installed on all DC locking
devices (strikes).
4. Check the power requirements of all devices being powered from the
panel; some devices might be overloading the supply.
